Was Thumpy-Dub an actual game or invention of Roy Clarke?

I have to agree with Big Unc, googling "thumpy dub" brings up references to the SW programme so a bit of creativity from Roy Clarke!

personally i think he got the idea from the TV show "Gladiators" there was a game on there with sticks which was they similar to "Thumpy-Dub"

Im sure i saw a programme some years ago and it featured an article which showed a long, greased pole laid over a river on which two contestants sat and gripped with thier legs. They then belted each other with either pillows or sacks filled with something(cant rem which now) and the one who stayed on was the winner.I would imagine Thumpy Dub was Roy Clarkes version of something similar.

Hector.
