Roy Clarke Scripts

As I've been writing my book, I've obviously also been hunting down copies of various Roy Clarke scripts from over the years. Roy hasn't kept many himself, but the BBC have many on file. I was wondering if any of our members here have originals in their collections?

I have from Summer Wine original copies of "Quick Quick Slow", "There Goes The Groom" and "Magic and the Morris Minor" and from Rosie, "The Eyes of the Law" then a host of others as digital of photocopies.

Anybody else?

There is a copy script of Jean Fergussons script for the end of the pier Last Of The Summer Wine show which I bought on ebay. It's been posted on here somewhere if that helps?

I may be able to dig out my pdf copy if you can't find it

That depends which version it is. If it is the later revision with Bernard in place of Clegg, I have a copy - but if it is the earlier version before Peter Sallis left the show I would love to see it. So would Jonathan Linsley, again, actually!

Thanks to forum member Barrychuckle, the scripts for "Enter The Finger" & "Perfection, thy name is Ridley" have entered my collection. The intention is that all of these scripts will be scanned to digital format with the aim of them being offered to a library or archive of some sort in the future for preservation – though it's early days yet.

The "Enter The Finger" script is interesting in that it seems all of Tom's scenes were last minute additions. Might this imply that Tom was not originally available for series 29?
 
I've commented on this before, but other than the episodes immediately following Compos death I've always felt the Tom character was a bit of a spare part. I felt he never quite gelled into the cast and perhaps out of loyalty to Bill they were trying to place a round peg in a square hole.

I wonder if Alan Bell perhaps persuaded Roy to include him when he'd perhaps been written out of Roys scripts?
 
Tom just didn't work out I'm afraid. As an arc to round off the remaining 4 episodes of series 21 it may have just about scraped through. The welcome home party assembling with the same fervour only to realise themselves within the next couple of episodes there was only going to be one Simmonite that belonged in their community. At the same time Mrs Avery would realise they outstayed their welcome and the 'turn left' scenario would finish them exiting the village the wrong way! In an ideal world he'd never bring Babs with him either.

I think by series 29 it was becoming even more difficult to find a place for him with Smiler having departed the series previously as well as it being perfectly reasonable for Auntie to be working on her own again. As such, it would have needed some heavy reworking to make an already difficult situation doable hence the shoehorning in of Tom's material at a later stage.

I'm genuinely sorry to add to the Tom bashing but I have to agree, he wasn't really a good fit. I do understand the need to extend the cast because 30 years of the same 7 characters would never have worked and a lot of the added characters worked brilliantly, Pearl ( of course) and Howard with Marina. Wesley and Edie bring Glenda and Barry along all worked out really well, adding Auntie Wainwright and Smiler were also a good addition but I think after that adding the others for maybe a few weeks might have worked better. It definitely did get crowded.
 
There were also some gems added later, I did like the Stella character who replaced Nora so some of the newer case instantly worked IMO
 
I too apologise for the Tom mauling but he was just wrong from the start . You know you get people in the music industry who look fantastic , innovatively dressed but then open their mouth and they cannot sing for toffee, I wonder if Alan J W Bell and Roy thought well he's a spit for his dad in looks let's get him on board only to find he didn't have the depth of acting skill or charisma of his dad.
 
Captain I agree, I think a one off episode or maybe a 2 parter would have been a suitable tribute to his dad and maybe given him a kick start to a more suitable show.

Has Roy taken any persuasion from Alan, I think this would have happened long before the scripts were printed for the cast. Tom's scenes really are a last minute addition printed on to differently coloured pages and bundled loosely with the rest of the bound script. I think it's likelier that there was either a question of availability or of budget that led to him being re-added to the roster at the last moment.

And I rather like him. Tom is no Compo, but was never intended to be because who could be. There is a struggle to find a place for his character to fit, but I think that's true of the series in general for much of the mid-2000s.
