I don't want to get into is this a good idea or not, I know the powers high up want us to have it even though none of the powers have actually signed this off yet as any UK law, but if you reach 70 or you have passed this golden age where you have to renew you driving licence every 3 years, or you have a medical licence which has to be renewed every 3 years.

If you want to do it online, which once filled in seems very efficient as your new licence arrives in 7-10 days, you cannot do it online now without first completing a .GOV digital ID, this is done by downloading the app on your mobile, going through setting up an account, then taking pictures of your Driving licence or Passport, then it turns on your front camera to take a picture of you, once it is happy you can then return to fill in your licence renewal request, without doing this your only option is to do it the old way and fill in forms, get photo's, plus scans of proof of who you are and where you live and send it off hoping it does not get lost in the mail, doing it via mail DLVA state it can take 16 plus weeks to arrive.
 
Using the phone screen wouldn't work for me - I can't see it clearly unless the content is so enlarged that I have to constantly scroll to read it.
 
Maybe we should go back to the Stone Age and you get your licence at Mason's workplace where she/he chisels out the details and image on a tablet of stone . No more scanning your card at a Restaurant to pay for food , the waiter/waitress brings you a bill itemised on a tablet of stone you chisel your name on it to agree the price and also the tip you want to pay then you hand over the cash.
 
I still get some strange looks when I have to occasionally produce my original paper driving license from 1983. The only thing I have with my fizzog on is my chainsaw license and dbs card and thise photo’s look nothing like me now!

It was only last year I had a photo licence until then it was a paper one. My only photo ID was my Costco card and for some reason no one would accept that!

I am informed you cannot get a paper licence anymore, when you renew it has to be done via post and is a right faff

They stopped paper licenses years ago but I haven't had to get mine renewed yet but when him in doors did I thought I might as well too, I did ours by post and it was quite easy really took about a week to get back. I've heard some people say it took months so I'm assuming they've tackled the backlog
