Gentle Comedies

Really hope you like As Time Goes By Barry. It is a great series. Well written and well acted. Introduced my parents to the show long ago and they thoroughly enjoyed it as well. You may recognize a few of the other actors in it that pop up from time to time.
Thanks Rick, in fairness I think it was yours and Peripherals posts on this thread that persuaded me to order the DVD boxset. I know you have discerning taste ! :D

Back on this thread again, I watched the very first episode of As Time Goes By last night on the recommendations in this thread and I have to say I was impressed with what I saw. Seems to definitely tick both the gentle & comedy box from what I saw!
As Time Goes By is wonderful. It is one of the most aired British comedies on American Public television. The characters, Lionel and Jean, develop a lot from the pilot episode and first series. My wife and I are very much a younger version of Lional and Jean (the characters they develop into, not the early characters).

Glad to hear Codfanglers that you see yourself and wife as a version of Lionel and Jean. I always thought of Lionel's character as a likeable curmudgeon. Help could get grumpy and stubborn at times. :-)

In one of the specials of the show I really like that Moira (Judith) said she would get so wrapped up in watching Dame Judi (Jean) act. That sometimes Moira would forget to reply, because she would be lost in the moment of Judi's acting that Moira would forget she was part of the scene. Something to that effect, I know it was a cumbersome way to explain it, trying to remember it from many years ago . It stuck with me at how good Dame Judi could act.

Hi Barry, glad I could help point you in the direction of the show. Miss having Peripheral around on the forums. Been awhile since hearing from him.

I watched the 4th Episode of the first series tonight, where Lionel does a talk at a university in Norwich and stays with an old flame at a B&B & they all end up meeting at the talk. I have to say I did find that episode a little bit awkward to watch, if you're familiar with it and it was certainly 'of it's time'

Hopefully it was an isolated episode as the earlier ones were much better IMO.

That is definitely an isolated episode, one of those where they are still working out the characters. It's all uphill from there. Eventually, you will meet the wonderful and hilarious extended family on both sides.

Yes. Dame Judi plays Jean so well that the character's tendencies get on some fans' nerves. I am in an "As Time Goes By" Facebook group. So many people LOVE the show but Jean's nosiness drives many crazy. :p As for me, I love it. The characters are meant to have loveable flaws.

It's sad to think, if LOTSW was still going there's a fair chance she could have made an appearance. It did seem to attract the very best actors at the top of their game...

Did we ever get a list of all the recommended comedies from this thread?
We held a meeting long ago and volunteered you to collate a list. Did you not get the memo? We sent it to your AOL account. ;-)

Just teasing, friend. Here ya go. They are in order mentioned. I just copy & paste as I skimmed through the pages. I may have overlooked one here or there, but at least it is a start. We are up to 90+ shows so far by my count. If anyone knows how to easily alphabetize them or put in columns or make the list easier to search / read please feel free.

I think The Gaffer would be suited on the list, that's a good gentle comedy.
And so is The Growing Pains of PC Penrose/Rosie.

I did post a summary list on a separate thread somewhere

Oops, that I did not know, Barry. We can have this one deleted if it is a duplicate.
Not a problem at all Richard :p

Better to have 2 lists than none! here's my thread

Did not realize you were also the thread starter on this one, Barry. I do like your list better. Thanks for the link. As Clegg has been known to say "I'll be quite now and go stand over there."

Cheers, friend. :)

Some more to add to the list. :)

Time After Time.
Kiss Me Kate.
L for Lester.
George and Mildred.

Thanks Rick, clearly I've missed some very important ones, never seen the first 3, but have seen the last 3. Particularly enjoyed From May to December, I felt it has parallels with As Time Goes By
