With the threats of snow in the next few days if we here in the flatland will get as bad as we did 11 years ago

How thick was the ice on the canal/river safe enough to stand on . I think the Antiques Roadshow showed an item about the London Frost Fair when the Thames froze over and they used to host a Fair on the ice many years ago , lets hope there's no repeat this year .
