I never knew the actors, seeing them so many times in the show was as near as I got. But standing on the road in front of the hillside filming for the video series was very emotional. We managed to get everything done in a couple of takes.

I was at scout camp when the news came through, we lost an absolutely brilliant actor that made one scruffy little Herbert the routing of childhood joy leaving a wonderful legacy of love and laughter.

That was probably the hardest scene they did in the whole show... would love to talk to the actors and find how they went about it and their feelings etc on the day.... even reading the script days before and knowing what was coming up..

I would say that Frank Thornton was a very strong presence on and off the set and that he helped in many different ways. And I think that I heard that children were actually forming those words on the hillside and it must have taken some efforts on the part of many to get the kids in all of the right spots, and that must have been a welcome distraction.
