OZ vaccine

My son lives in Australia where covid 19 is very much under control. He called me this morning and told me he was impressed by the fact that we now have 52% of the UK vaccinated. In spite of the fact that covid is well under control in OZ there are many complaints about the vaccine jabs. Can you believe that up to now only 9% of the population have been jabbed. If there are any outbreaks in OZ there is an immediate lock down. We have lock downs here but the powers that be are too slow to act when outbreaks do re-occur. However, the latest figures do look promising. Keep safe everyone.

New Zealand and Australia have a no nonsense approach to it, I'm very impressed by their actions but I'm surprised by their vaccine rates, if they get that moving quicker they'll be very much admired.

India has had the highest daily cases in the world and it has been out of control for nearly a month with a double mutated variant, but it's only from today that you have to quarantine in a hotel when returning from there.........

I am in Perth, West Oz and guess what???????......Just went into an immediate 3 day lockdown with no notice due to a Covid scare here and the first case of community transmission in over a year. Nearly ALL of our Covid cases are overseas arrivals and so it is with this one BUT.............
Because of our Govt's lack of competence by placing quarantined people in the most unsuitable hotel (Not my assessment....the Govt's OWN!!) the virus got spread between a couple of rooms. On day 12 of a confinement a person was tested and showed negative and so was released after day 14. A week later he tested positive and so did a person with whom he had been living....PANIC Immediate lockdown here.

Not really complaining much as for the most part we have done pretty well with Covid here and harsh immediate measures have been the main reason for this but as this particular weekend is a special long weekend here to commemorate ANZAC Day (MUCH bigger here than remembrance day Nov 11 but for the same cause) All dawn services have been cancelled and day commemorative services have also been cancelled!:(

The problem with the vaccine rollout seems to be a lack of supply coupled with several people getting blood clots after the Astra Venica (Sp?) jab. The public is concerned and as that particular vaccine is the most common here, a lot of people have baulked at getting it. The Govt has now banned it's use for the under 50"s.

I am booked to get my annual flu shot next Wednesday and am booked for the 1st Covid shot in June!

As I said there is no real rush here to be vaccinated as, for the most part (Particularly in WA) Covid has been controlled very well and comparatively little disruption has occurred.

Given the slow response to incoming infection threats, I'm beginning to reconsider my 3-week visit to England in October and the 10-day visit at Christmas. I'm fully vaccinated, but there are chinks in that armor that could make me hazardous to unvaccinated people.

Does the govt there have a rationale for why the lockdown is 3 days, does that give them time to identify contacts of the infected person?

Brian you're government should be very proud of how they've handled the pandemic. Other countries should follow suit.

The Oz approach only works if you close down the borders before the virus gets well established. But they now have a problem of how they can ever open international borders again without quarantining if they want no Covid cases.

I think we should all try and contain it within our borders while it's still raging until we're all vaccinated.

The rationale for the snap 3 day lockdown IS to allow for contact tracing and also to try and prevent further spread. Depending on the outcome of the tracing and testing results we may or may not have that period extended. There is obviously a lot going on behind the scenes which we know about but which makes dull and incomplete reading on a forum such as this.
As for being proud of our pollies (politicians), being extremely generous I DEFINITELY wouldn't go that far!!!!! :fp:

WellyMan, you are correct in your analysis. EVERY time one of the States "reopens" it's borders (Yes..each State has opened and closed it's borders with others numerous times) they immediately slam shut because someone becomes infected.

Case in point... We just re-established basically unrestricted and unquarantined international travel with New Zealand because both countries had very low to no infection rate. Within HOURS there was cross contamination!!!

Whatever solution to the problem ends up being, I don't think it will be fast, and although they will of course take all the credit, Pollies will NOT have played any significant role except to confuse things!

As you say Brian, if there's a problem in OZ or NZ things are slammed shut. Not like here, UK, if we have a problem we get a warning that action will be taken in 4 or 5 days time. In the meantime, carry on spreading the disease willy nilly. I heard a saying the other day, NOWHERE is safe till EVERYWHERE is safe. How true that is.

Its so hard to strike the right balance we cant stay locked up forever but we need to open up with due care and attention, trouble is not everyone sings from the same hymn sheet. You can see that every time restrictions are lifted from the abhorrent man who deliberately infected work colleagues and three babies at a Gym in Majorca , yes he was arrested but it was all too late, to groups of people of all ages who go back to the way they lived before they were "deprived ."

Educating everyone to the dangers this disease brings seems a totally impossible task and the only way to guarantee reducing the impact of the disease is to vaccinate the world and we are way way way off that . It appears that each nation has their own plans but it needs a joint strategy but that's never going to happen .

And part of Australia even went into lockdown because of a lie by a pizza shop worker!

I'd agree about politicians everywhere being more of a problem than a help. They seem to have panicked and followed the example of the Chinese dictatorship rather then following well estàblished procedures for dealing with a pandemic which didn't involve lockdowns.
