This picture was grabbed this morning at a very wet York station, it is the departure of a 45 year old HST set on a cross country route, the coaches you can see in the background are rail replacement coaches, LNER and GWR have pulled most of the Hitachi train sets today due to a technical fault, the fact they have grounded most of these trains must mean there is a serious issue with them, a little like when aircraft are grounded, now these relatively new trains have been plagued with faults, probably minor but enough to cause delays, I experienced one such problem in Newcastle about 2 years ago, when a loud audible alarm message was played through the train speakers throughout the train for 20 minutes, it seems the crew did not know how to cancel the alarm and had to wait for a senior technician to arrive, I see on a daily basis on LNER's own website these trains running late due to faults or totally cancelled

There is a series with Julie Walters traveling the coasts of England and Scotland on various trains. One train looked like a subway train with no obvious engine and it was in the country, so no third rail. So how was this train powered?

Probably an older DMU unit, which is based on a bus chassis with the engine under the coaches, the picture is a early DMU from the 60's, the later ones look more modern
