Scones

What came first the Cornish Pastie or the Scone?. :)
A wealth of historical evidence confirms the importance of the Cornish pasty as part of the county's culinary heritage, with some of the first references appearing during the 14th Century, during the reign of Edward III. The Oxford English Dictionary suggests that pasty was identified in around 1300.
Scones are thought to have originated in Scotland in the early 1500s and the first known print reference was made by a Scottish poet in 1513. Scones were originally made using oats, shaped into a large round and scored into four or six wedges.

Delving too deep maybe?

Cooking show on now and Rick Stein has been looking at the history of the Cornish pastie. It appears the pastie itself was the food of toffs and gentry, the filling being mostly venison as a way of using up the meat before it went off . When the humble potato made an appearance and was added to the pastie it became the food of the working class .

The crimp was critical because it became a handle and the miners could eat the contents by picking up the pastie with their dirty hands, eat the body of the pastie and throw the crimped handle away thus de-risking the chance of them poisoning themselves from the potential residue of arsenic , uranium and other nasties that could be on their dirty hands .
