The changing face of rural...Holmfirth

Always a pleasure to see your then and now pictures Pete
Thanks Terry that means a lot,it makes it worthwhile,I can't believe how moved and upset I still feel seeing Clegg beside Compo again,I suppose it's because I visit Compo every time and am just used to seeing only him,how fitting that Norman is once again by his side,in Holmfirth, thanks again.

I particularly like this photograph not for the location but because of the sadly departed Brian Glover who not only was a great Actor [especially as the egocentric games teacher in Kes, love it when he tells the kids he is Bobby Charlton today ] but I remember watching him as his alter ego "Leon Arras the man from Paris" on the ITV Wrestling on a Saturday afternoon he was just brilliant and you can see how his career in acting flourished . :)

Yes he was great wasn't he,a real life teacher in a Barnsley school when he got the part in Kes,I really like this episode that the scene is from,Keeping Britain tidy,I think he spent the whole episode carring that wheel from the mini, can't believe they all got in Noras when they went to call in Wally, and he had to sit there with the wheel on his lap, sometimes the locations are miles apart,on some episodes the characters can turn a corner in Holmfirth and appear round it in Marsden six miles away, but in this particular scene Noras house is just a few yards away.

Emma I did take these especially for you !
It's the site of that building in Victoria park, you can still see the foundations of it in the grass, and the view looking down into Holmfirth,it was quite rainy by now but I think the photos are ok,in my next visit I'll try and find the 8th C doorway arch that was part of it and was moved

Thanks so much! You have no idea how much I have enjoyed looking at these photos. It looks like as close as I will ever get to visiting these sites in person, so it's greatly appreciated.

Haha thanks ☺
It's exactly why I post them,so people can have a look around Holmfirth and the area who may not be able to get.
If you ever do get round to visiting though there's always an offer to take you round some of the hidden locations that you would never find normally.
I'v got loads more photos to take and post when I go again in a week or so,some of the changes from the early 1900's photos I have are unbelievable. Thanks again.

When I first saw this photo, from 1913,I thought it was round the back of the Church, but then I saw the long steps and realised that behind the now demolished wall was the little square that would one day have in it Sids Cafe.20171204_104442-1032x581.jpg 0b827a6dc4893c6fa0cbb1e7b0388317--the-church-change-to.jpg

To take this photo I'm stood outside the gates of the Memorial park near Sids Cafe and the river and ducks (and Magnetism tree).
Bamforths had a shop and photographers, shown here, next to the postcard works,it's such an eyesore at the moment, I hope it looks nice when it's finished,I don't know what the plans are but obviously there's lots of work going on there.

This is looking towards Towngate in the early 1900's,the large building is still being used as a bank, the view is towards the distinctive South Lane, steep and curved with a tunnel like entrance in the wall, although that's not apparent in this photo.
