Keen Trainspotter

I occasionally watch NHK, a Japanese public TV station, and they have one show entirely devoted to trains. Their trains are quite interesting. The train cars are brightly colored and sometimes have a theme that reflect the local areas that the trains run in. These trains are all local and sometimes are just one or two cars long. And yes, they do have train spotters, many have scopes or cameras so they can catch trains at their best. Many train companies operate on a shoestring and many towns and villages have events designed to attract tourists to their particular line. So if you ever find yourself in Japan, go find a handy train depot, grab your camera and do some train spotting!
