Still Open All Hours

Watched it late last night, there were some laughs but it could of been any of the earlier episodes with a fresh coat of paint, tried to make Granville to much like the old Arkwright, okay it is much better than 95% of the rubbish the BBC are currently pumping out,but it could of been so much better

Did others find it a wee bit staccato - a series of cameos with little overriding theme. I must watch it again (if I managed to record properly - my Sky system was playing up).

Yeah, was not best pleased myself. Will watch again on Sunday
hoping for an improvement.

Did enjoy the Call the Midwife Christmas Special.

Very well put. The main thing for me is that it's entertaining.

As far as it trying to copy the original, I suppose it's like watching say a classic 1981 episode of LOTSW, then watching a 2009 one.

When I read the recent book on Open All Hours it was clearly stated that the whole series was a collection of cameos without any theme, and that was the general idea. So we could say that it was continuing in that way.

One of the snags was I had set it to record to hard drive and was watching with subtitles, but of course the recording over-rode that command so no subtitles: for some of us that is a problem in following all the dialogue.

Climbing up a ladder and falling off, seems familiar! It seems that all Granvilles aspirations have evaporated and he has ended up as another Arkwright (presumably he is Granville Arkwright as we can guess tat his mother was not married),

Just seen the second episode of this new series (Sunday 38 Dec).

A few of the jokes are heavily copied from the old series, but nothing to worry about.

A shame the cast consists of the same people so often, already people are returning from last year's Xmas show.

I enjoyed tonight's episode. While the original was a masterpiece of comedy television I dont think we should ever expect this rehash to reach those dizzy heights, that would be asking far too much. I think the trick is to accept this new series for what it is, a nostalgic trip back to the hay day of British small screen comedy and as Terry mentions above is still better than most of whats on offer currently. I enjoyed seeing Brigit Forsyth tonight, who once played a stellar role as Thelma Ferris in Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads.

I have to say I struggled through the first episode and was left a little cold. Didn't bother with the second episode.

Just downloading it now!! Can't wait.

Chuck, how are you getting the BBC shows, not on dvd. For instance the new Halifax show now starting the 3rd season. I watched it earlier in the year on PBS,but it watch shows now in the regular season. You Tube? Thanks, and Happy New Year

I download them as "torrents" from web sites like thepiratebay.cr . Someone in the UK
records the tv program and uploads it as a torrent. Bunches of us download it.

This is all new to me - I used to just video tape things! Then post the tape to some one else.

Have you found a way to locate the item you want on piratebay without having the selection list surrounded by pornographic images and without the system opening a new window with full-screen porn images and a creepy voice asking if you're a boy or a girl? The only time I've looked at piratebay, I had to spend the next couple of days clearing a whole lot of disgusting stuff off my computer. And to make a bad experience even worse, I never actually got to the episode I had been looking for.

Thanks Chuck, have heard of Torrents. Will have my son help me out. He is the computer guru here. He often warns me of downloads, back door viruses, etc.

Maybe it should not Still be Open

I have watched both episodes and the one last Christmas, once Ronnie B had sadly departed, the shop was best left totally closed . There are too many references back to the original [in the latest one of the Chuckle Brothers opens the shop door with huge imaginary dog on a long lead brilliantly played out in the original series ] .

Whilst imitation can sometimes be the sincerest form of flattery writing in lines where Granville stutters just do not work . The most damming scenario which just doesn't register is the Black Widow making suggestive remarks towards Granville which is a 180 degree turn from the original where she considered Granville a person to be immature, young and daft preferring to deal with a more mature person of a similar age .

Perhaps it reflects that there is no younger writers on the horizon who can emulate and perhaps surpass the great work churned out effortlessly by Roy Clarke, John Sullivan etc hence the BBC try to go with the trusted formula.
