I think that what ensure the longevity of the series was the constant need to add new characters. Some of which just jumped out the screen like Barey and Brenda and family.
Has there ever been planned or exist a Summerwine Day/Weekend in Holmfirth. People could come dressed up and a few activities planned. I was thinking of something along the lines of WW2 weekends that seem to be popular

I am not sure if I am going against the grain but I really enjoyed watching how the series reinvented itself which must have been necessary for it to last over three decades. If it was on now I wonder who might be cast for the trio ...
I agree that mentioning passing and funerals would go against the light hearted humour of the show. However, Compo's passing was done with amazing humour and dignity.

For me it is Car and Garter where he is the one convinced to attempt the latest crazy stunt which Compo initially avoids, and ultimately does (it appearss Sid has more bravery to try the racing rather than face Ivy - a wise decision)...
