i think the one thing Summer Wine brought that a lot of other shows didn't due to it's longevity, I think Carry On's might be another example is that of guaranteed work every year, and an income for at least few months of the year...

I do often think Auntie Wainwright was sort of a replacement on Arkwright, because Ronnie Barker had retired from acting in the late 1980s, and I think Open All Hours wouldn't have ever thought of being brought back.
