Who were the biggest name guest stars?

I would say that John Cleese is arguably the biggest name and a person you wouldn`t expect to appear. Kriss Akabusi was an odd choice and may well have encouraged people to watch for curiosity`s sake if nothing else.

If the Dads Army movie is a success?

There are obviously plenty of movies around aimed at that demographic but there is no doubt that the studios have seen the value in making films for the `silver generation` too. Song for Marion, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Philomena, Quartet, Nebraska etc. There are so many adaptations of...

If the Dads Army movie is a success?

That is probably true to some extent. I think in recent years though we have seen several films based on TV series that have been aimed very largely at the British market. For example, The Inbetweeners, Alan Partridge, Bad Education, Harry Hill the Movie etc. Dad`s Army will certainly be much...

    RIP Smiler

It was nice to see some pretty decent media coverage for the funeral. The only thing that I thought was a slight shame, is that they focused almost completely on his role as Blakey. I understand, of course, that this was his most iconic performance but he should also be remembered for other...

    frank thornton in the 3

I think Frank Thornton was an excellent choice as the new third man. Roy Clarke's scripts weren't quite as strong by that point and Truly is not as memorable as Foggy but he was as good a replacement as anyone could reasonably have expected.

    RIP Smiler

Sad to hear that he has passed on. I thought he did a great job in the series and Smiler was one of the extra characters who really benefited the show.

Connections with As Time Goes By

Sadly I am not related to Geoffrey Palmer. Geoffrey Palmer is certainly not a chameleon and he has played a lot of military characters over the years. His career speaks for itself though and when there was a best sitcom poll by the BBC, he had appeared in more of the top 100 than pretty much...

Connections with As Time Goes By

I don't think anyone would claim that Geoffrey Palmer is as versatile as somebody like Ronnie Barker, for example, but he certainly isn't one dimensional. Try watching his chilling performance as a child molester in Inspector Morse for a start. 10 Geoffrey Palmer comedy appearances that people...

Connections with As Time Goes By

Tony Millan appeared in ATGB as a Gorillagram and in LOTSW as Gunnie in According to the Prophet Bickerdyke. To join in the discussion, I can understand why people say that AGTB is not funny but the cast makes it work for me. Geoffrey Palmer deserves to be recognized as one of the great sitcom...

If the Dads Army movie is a success?

That`s a very good shout. His performance as the landlord in Early Doors had some similarities to Sid`s character.

Was it Series 5 that had the terrible use of stuntmen? Particularly with the horse riding...

If the Dads Army movie is a success?

The Dads Army film will be released in February with an all star cast. If it is a success then can people see Last of the Summer Wine being given the movie treatment at some point in the future? There is certainly no doubt that more and more films are being aimed at the silver demographic now.

Over 3 decades an "unsung hero" !!!!!

That is actually only a small selection... The Liver Birds, The Generation Game, Citizen Smith, Only Fools and Horses, Just Good Friends, Are You Being Served… He worked on everything! :42:

Over 3 decades an "unsung hero" !!!!!

I agree that Ronnie Hazlehurst was superb for Summer Wine and a key part of things. His list of credits for other shows will probably also never be matched. For example, Reginald Perrin, Some Mothers Do Ave Em, Sorry, The Two Ronnies, Butterflies, Dear John etc. Some great stuff.

Who else would have been good casting for a member of the trio?

Geoffrey Palmer would have been perfect as the third man imo. He obviously played a military type in Reginald Perrin and Blackadder and could have been great. Fulton MacKay would also have been good and, of course, he very nearly did appear.

    Compos Passing Trilogy

I agree that these are wonderful episodes. Roy Clarke did a wonderful job with the writing and it makes me wish he had attempted to tackle some rather more real (though not this sad obviously) subjects during the show`s run.

    Bargain DVDs

Apologies if this is mentioned elsewhere but I noticed that each of the series DVDs are just a fiver on Amazon at the moment. An absolute bargain for anyone who doesn`t have the full set.

    Cooper & Walsh

I think this gives another indication of how the concept of Cooper and Walsh is very different to most shows. I also think that, while it`s understandable, not being able to state who the writers will be is a huge problem. It is the writing that makes a show after all...

    Cooper & Walsh

I would respectfully disagree with you one on this one Pearl. You already mentioned Still Open All Hours and Last Tango in Halifax but Boomers will return this year, Count Arthur Strong started again this week and the Still Game team revealed a while ago that the BBC would like a new series...

    Cooper & Walsh

I can understand people being disappointed that this hasn`t worked out but (and I hope you don`t mind me saying this) I don`t think the BBC can be blamed for one second. They gave LOTSW 31 series and, unless they received a great pilot script, the BBC really shouldn`t be making a spin-off from...
