    Laughter track

They never used a laugh track or anything like that. Like Barrychuckle says, they always used real laughter from screening audiences. Up until the late 1980s the indoor scenes were mostly performed live before an audience, so it was slightly different until then.

When did Clegg become more fainthearted

When I re-watch the series each time I look for the changes in Clegg. One thing I've noticed is that it mostly happened after the arrival of Marina in Series 8. Although its never explained in the show, in her first appearance they make reference to events that were covered by the stage play...

    Where did Marina hide

The earlier shots of her bringing it up the stairs and such also suggest what she was carrying was much smaller. I've always assumed that this was intentional to catch the audience off guard and get a laugh out of them when she shows up with that giant bear.

    Christopher Beeny

Very sad to see another actor from LOTSW pass on. Even though I didn't like the character changes they did, I did appreciate his efforts to make the most of the role he had.

The Simpsons, will it break the LOTSW record??????

It's hard to say but it also depends on how you define "longest running sitcom." The Simpsons already has far more episodes and although it ran over the course of 37 years, LOTSW only had 31 actual series. Al Jean, like Captain said, denies the show is ending and season 32 is already planned.

    Where is this room?

There are episodes that show there are some stairs going down into the ground on the other side of a wall to the left (when looking at Compo and Nora's house. So I always interpreted that scene as meaning Nora and Wally had a room down there, which would have been adjacent to Compo's bottom...

    4K/UHD of LOSW Episodes

That's because the differences are minor and only apparent depending on the source of the image and other variables. My living room TV is a cheaper brand and it does a good job on everything from HD to old standard def LOTSW disks. The newer TV's mostly pay off for people trying to create a...

    R.I.P Juliette

It is very sad to see another long time cast member pass on but I realized recently that we are only a few years short of 50 years from when the show started. That really puts a different perspective on things.

    Herman Teasdale/Moreton Beamish

Actually, they didn't way very long at all. John Comer died after filming "Getting Sam Home" and the next series saw the introduction of Crusher, Howard, Pearl, and Marina. Plus, Wesley made his second appearance as a guest star and then became a regular supporting character in the final...

    Herman Teasdale/Moreton Beamish

Your recollection is correct Rick. That is how they were presented in the episodes. I think part of the problem of why Babs didn't work is that she was made the focus of all four episodes she appeared in. For the audience at the time, still trying to get used to the show not having Compo...

    Herman Teasdale/Moreton Beamish

In his book Alan Bell says Roy's original plan was for Babs to be Mrs. Avery's daughter (not her niece) and that she was going to have another daughter that was dating a much older man. Bell argued Clarke out of that approach. However, I do think it represents Roy's desire in later years to do...

    Nora Batty Absence Series 23 & 24

I recall reading that when Kathy Staff left the first time (to do Crossroads) there were two reasons. First, they had offered her a lot of money to do the new Crossroads. Second, she didn't think they knew what to do with Nora after Compo was gone. The series before she left Nora was mainly...

How about the changes in Barry?

The changeover specifically occurs in "How to Create a Monster." Barry and Glenda have a (nearly) new car and Barry doesn't want Edie to know because he's afraid Wesley will want to tinker with it. He specifically says that Wesley is made for old junkers, not new cars. At the end he agrees to...

    Best Performance #1

"Mysterious Feet . . ." would be my choice.

    What about Seymour?

I guess you could explain it that way Marianna, but as Adrian says, its very clear in "Uncle" that they have no idea who he is. I suspect that the original idea Roy Clarke had was for him to be someone they hadn't met before, but by the time they made it to Series 9 that had changed. Plus...

    Series 1 dates

Most of the series were filmed over the course of the year prior to the one they aired. There are a few exceptions to this (mostly in the first ten Series or so) where they were filmed early in the year and aired later and there are also some Series that aired more than a year after they were...

Last of the Summer Wine Production Dates

Bell's book does make clear this was the case. "Last Post and Pigeon" did its location filming at Dover and France first in 1999, for example. In looking into the details around Brian Wilde's second departure from the show, I did find information that indicated "There Goes the Groom" was...

When/why did Clegg become phobic towards women?

Not according to Andrew Vine's book and a quote from Jean Fergusson. As I said above, the reference was to the stage play. I think the later "trapped in a lift" story was meant to be a later incident between them.

Pete Postlethwaite in A Merry Heatwave

My theory from the previous thread, which I still hold to, is that he's the photographer when Compo crashes the wedding after going over the wall in search of holly. He clearly does say something, but its not audible in the audio to me. However, I believe the rules at the time were that spoken...

Last of the Summer Wine Production Dates

I've always wanted more detailed information than what is in Bell's book but I guess we will never have that. Now obviously parts of a given episode were filmed at different times, but it would be interesting to know things like when "There Goes the Groom" was filmed versus the rest of the...
