When/why did Clegg become phobic towards women?

My sense is that its tied to when Marina arrived, as Cap says. The play where Marina, Pearl, Howard, and Crusher originate apparently involved Marina going after Clegg romantically. When she first appears in Series 8 he is clearly uncomfortable with her. We later get the separate "trapped in...

British TV in the 1970s was such a small world!

I keep finding these examples, lol. Just picked up the re-release of Hitchhikers Guide (directed by Alan Bell, of course.) Not only is Michael Cager involved in this one like he was with Bell for all those Summerwine years, right off the top I see in the first episode we have Joe Melia as the...

British TV in the 1970s was such a small world!

It wasn't in the 1970s, but I watched Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" tonight for the first time in many years and noticed at least three actors who have Summerwine ties. Gordon Kaye and Bryan Pringle both have prominent roles, of course, but I also noticed Ann Way, who has a small role in "Brazil"...

British TV in the 1970s was such a small world!

It seems like every show from that era has a bunch of people from other shows. The Dustbinmen, S2, episode 2. I was watching this on YouTube. Trevor Bannister and Brian Wilde were in the regular cast, along with Brian Pringle (who guest starred later in "Cheering up Ludovic." Who also has...

    A scary thought

Providers with no "public" responsibilities don't have to worry about what is politically incorrect and have been known to take some chances. I think it could be done, not as a remake but more of a re-start with a modern take. Bell and Clarke wanted to do that but were constrained by the BBC...

    A scary thought

I was thinking the other day about how they would update Last of the Summer Wine if they restarted it today. And one thing I realized is that if they started like the original did with the actors (and the characters they are playing) are about 50, it would be people born in the late 1960s/early...

    Return of the Warrior

I'm not sure the map means anything! ;-) Holmfirth in real life isn't Holmfirth in Summerwineland, after all. Some locations are so far away that there is no way a trio of old guys would wander that far in a day. Nor do we really know where Foggy's house is anyway. In "The Man from Oswestry"...

    Return of the Warrior

When he first comes off the bus he checks a taxi but isn’t willing to pay what they want. He presumably hoped to find Clegg and Compo nearby to help him take the bags home, meaning Nora’s and the Cafe are relatively close to the bus stop.

    Ron Backhouse.

Someone previously quoted Alan Bell as saying all the interiors used for Clegg's house were studio set filming. Same would be true of Compo's house. In his book Alan Bell said they used studio sets for the café in all but two cases. So I don't know what you mean here. As far as I've ever...

    Ron Backhouse.

Sad news. I always liked the idea that they let him play himself on the show. One of the things I like to do is try and figure out which pub scenes are studio and which were actual location filming. In the later years it’s often hard to tell.

    GOLD TV

Someone on a Summerwine Facebook group I follow emailed Gold and got a response that said LOTSW would be returning next year. So it’s off for at least the rest of 2018.

    Belated Report

Yes, I've felt that perhaps it was Peter Sallis' wishes that the grave be adorned plainly. The only person who could really clarify that would be his son, but I have to assume at this point that this is what was intended.

    Wesley's Land Rover questions

I know a bit about cars and Land Rover but you will probably need a real expert Rick! The reason is that the classic Land Rover designs changed much more slowly then we are used to in the US. The original design (Series 1) was produced from 1948-1958. Series II only lasted a few years...

    Compo's matchbox

In a previous discussion of the matchbox it was noted that there were novelty matchboxes sold that had a variety of things in them. This included things that were meant to be disgusting or shocking. It seems to me this is the most likely explanation. I do not feel that Compo carrying around a...

    Of Funerals and Fish Question

By the time they made the pilot they had moved the character ages to in their 50s (pretty close to the cast in that regard) so I don't think there was any intent that we were supposed to think Peter Sallis was playing someone that much older. At least that is what Andrew Vine's book says. As...

    Understanding classic comedy

Remakes aren't really aimed at the original audience, though. They've remade several US tv shows in recent years and they've done pretty well in the ratings (by current standards) but it's not the original audience watching them. It's a younger audience. In some ways I agree with the...

    Of Funerals and Fish Question

That remains a debate. As the camera pans, I see both 1900 and 1920. The 1920 is probably what was intended as it makes sense for the character ages. In a previous discussion here we concluded that it was a poor attempt to disguise an existing tombstone that said 1900-1971.

    Episode Titles

I believe there are quite a few episodes that have titles not used by the characters. While Roy Clarke did title many episodes using phrases from the script, there are also many that are simply descriptive. Many of the holiday episodes, for example, have descriptive titles.

    There goes the groom?

I saw this thread was bumped a while back but was surprised when I couldn't find the reference in Alan Bell's book to what I had referred to back in 2015. I'm not totally convinced that the book hasn't been updated since release (at least in the digital form I have it in) but my current version...

    Box Set

It's the complete series released in the Region 2 (UK) format. They repackaged the previous individual two series set releases for this package, so its nothing new in that regards. Early holiday specials are all grouped rather than being on the disks in order of broadcast, Series 9 is split...
