A Rose by any other name

Rose #2 as well. Wasn't Rose #1 only in the first season? (It's been a few years since I saw KUA) If so, she might not had enough time to really develop into the role.

Rose No2 definitely for me, she had a vulnerable quality about her which made her more likeable. The Shirley Stelfox Rose was just really hard faced and interestingly Hyacinth was in the first series too.

I'd echo these sentiments.

Rose mark 1 seemed to be rather more transactional shall we say with her temporary guardianship of wayward husbands and assorted unsuitable males.

Behind the scenes Roy was finding his feet with the characters and they were in my opinion, apart from Onslow, not yet fully formed.

Later when Mary Millar took over I felt this new incarnation of Rose was looking for her Mr Right but was sadly knowing this was unlikely.

Roy's masterstroke was that all of the sisters aspired for something more but beneath the varying veneers of respectability they were family and there for each other in brief but revealing moments.

Rose No2 had very similar traits to Marina and was ultimately likeable and had pathos.
Shirley played similar characters in many of her previous roles, Personal Services springs to mind where she played an escort. That said she then played the antithesis in her final role as the almost puritanical Edna Birch in Emmerdale!!!
