An observation re the episode Ferret Come Home

Why didn't the trio sneak into the Batty house and retrieve Compo's ferret while Nora was looking for the non-existent contact lense,instead of just walking off?Unless they'd already got the ferret bfore walking off......

on the audio episode (the one on tape and then cd) when Peter Sallis narrates he says it was too busy there with everyone looking for it, so i assume somewhere its written the trio just decide to walk off, after all Foggy does shake his head in the episode.
