The other thing that amazes me is when you look at the seaside pics of the early 1900's the men are pretty much all wearing 3 piece suits and caps despite it being really sunny!

Well when they'd dumped the wives and bairns on the beach supervised the building of the sandcastle mound that became the table for the picnic they were off to the local club or pub and you cannot be seen in there if you aren't dressed in your suit and tie .

In winter you kept your hot pie under you cap to keep your head warm.

My Grandad was like that, he'd take me combing South Shelds beach looking for jet and he'd be dressed as if he was going to a wedding.

My granddad always had is waist coat on, he would sit in the fire side chair with his cap on tapping his fingers on the armchair whistling at the budgie.

My grandad was exactly the same, he wore a tie every day of his retired life with either a v neck jumper or button up cardigan. My nan used to iron his ties for him to keep them straight (& shiny )

That said in hindsight I think he was better dressed than many today.....

Yes but in those days they could pass it off as a nasty social disease picked up in the trenches
