Attempted to introduce my boyfriend to Summer Wine

So my sister is here and she and mom are drinking coffee and talking about superhero movies and I have nothing to add to that conversation except "Hulk mad, Hulk smash." so I'm just drinking my coffee and playing on my phone. Lol I'm realizing that we're kind of like the ladies coffee group, we just talk about different things! Lol

Anyway, so last night, I tried to get my boyfriend to come over and watch Summer Wine with me and it did not go so well and I think it's time to find a new boyfriend. Just kidding, I plan to marry this one! Lol But anyway, we definitely found out some things about each other last night. He had had a bad day at work so I dont blame him for being a little aggressive, but he was like "No, I don't like your British crap, it's boring!" And that kind of made me a little mad so I was like "Well, I don't like anime, but I don't call it crap, you need to chill!" So we talked back and forth like that for a little while and came to the conclusion that we don't have to like the same things but we need to respect each other's interests and we were cool by the end of the phone call. So I guess introducing my boyfriend to Summer Wine is a no go, but that's ok, we still have plenty of other things we can do together. And I'm finally free from having to watch anime, so that's good! Lol

The trick is to have it running in the background when he comes over, then you have to do something else for 10 mins and leave him in the room with it on, maybe around a scene from stop that bath, when you come back go to turn it off, if he tells you to hold fire, then you have cracked it

Lol sounds like a good idea! I'm also trying to get some other friends into it. I have a feeling one of my friends, who I met in therapy and who likes British comedies, would really enjoy it. I actually haven't heard from her in a few days and when I went to check her Facebook page, she hasn't posted anything since we last talked. She may be back in the psych ward but I'm not waking her sister up at 4:45am to confirm that! Lol I'll probably suggest it to her next time we talk. She has depression, anxiety, and autism and I feel like Summer Wine would be good for her. I think it would be good for my boyfriend too if he would give it a chance! He's neurotypical but he's always so stressed! Lol

Another way might be to watch the special 30 Years of Summer Wine with him and your friends. It gives a great overview of the show and the characters. Plus you may see actors that appear later in the show who you also really like. - Another great reason to watch. :21:

For example:
Truly (Frank Thornton) was also in Are You Being Served? as Captain Peacock.
Entwistle (Burt Kwouk) was Cato from The Pink Panther movie series.
Smiler (Stephen Lewis) was Blakey from On The Buses.
Mrs. Avery (Julie Wallace) was in The Fifth Element.
Miss Davenport (Josephine Tewson) was in Keeping Up Appearances.

Watching this special is what really got me invested in the show. Before I had only seen a few random episodes and wasn't really sure what to think yet. Being a fan of Truly, Entwistle and Miss Davenport from other shows and seeing them in Summer Wine made me want to watch the show even more.

Make a plan to sit down with some popcorn and the special then enjoy. That's my 2 cents worth anyway.

This was taken from the Summer Wine Wiki. The author Roy Clarke explains... (like he did in the above mentioned Special).

Clarke nearly turned the job down as he felt that the BBC's idea for a programme about three old men was a dull concept for a half-hour sitcom. Instead, Clarke proposed that the men should all be unmarried, widowed, or divorced and either unemployed or retired, leaving them free to roam around like adolescents in the prime of their lives, unfettered and uninhibited.[6]

Clarke chose the original title, The Last of the Summer Wine, to convey the idea that the characters are not in the autumn of their lives but the summer, even though it may be "the last of the summer".

I am a huge Summer Wine fan and my wife is a moderate Summer Wine fan. So we view it in moderation.

With the different eras of Summer Wine, it is hard to come up with a perfect starter. It depends on the person. However, I suggest getting your boyfriend to give it a chance for 60 minutes. I always so there some something special with the start of season 8, Mysterious Feet of Nora Batty followed by Keeping Britain Tidy. Also, those episodes are where Nora and Wally are at their best.

If he still doesn't like it, then I don't think he ever will. Some seasons take getting used to.

I think Summer Wine could be very good for your friend as well. There is the tranquil aspect of the Yorkshire Dales in the background and the slow-paced, family-friendly comedy (well most of it anyway).

I remember (not by name) the first episode I watched. It was on U.S. public television after Keeping Up Appearances which I watched quite a bit then. It was an episode with the trio walking in a field (Foggy 2.0 era) and I just sat there and thought, "Is something going to happen? They're just rambling on about life."). So I sat and watched, repeat, and realized that our domestic programming is so wound up, to be expecting blowing up, potty-mouthed joke, riveting/intense/perverted tension was supposedly "normal."

Excellent suggestions, guys! I did wake up to an apology text from my boyfriend for being so rude about everything lately. He didn't have to apologize, we were ok, but it was nice that he did. I also found out that my friend is in the psych ward and she's doing well there, according to her sister. I guess we'll talk when she gets out. And I did suggest it to my friend who has everything I have plus Bipolar disorder. She's starting ICT (Intensive Community Treatment) soon and she says she'll need something calming to distract her from the stress of that. I finished ICT a few months ago and I know how stressful it can be so I told her to definitely have a look at Summer Wine.

I'm completely with you on that one Onslow, I watched a few episodes when I was young and thought this is rubbish nothing actually happens. But now I've thankfully reevaluated, I understand that I completely missed the point, the joy of Summer Wine is watching lots of seniors who society has largely written off enjoy the passage of time in a comical way in glorious surroundings. I can feel my blood pressure dropping as I watch each episode......

I agree with you both Onslow and Barry. At the time I first saw LotSW I was watching a lot of Fawlty Towers, Benny Hill, Red Dwarf, Black Adder, Father Ted, Absolutely Fabulous, The Young Ones, etc styles of comedy. Where there is a lot going on to keep the viewer entertained. Was not used to a slower paced and more gentle form of comedy.

Roy Clarke's words from my above post describing his thoughts really clued me in to what the show was all about.

Yeah, exactly! I can definitely feel my blood pressure dropping when I watch it too. As someone with BPD, I'm constantly in a highly emotional state. Try juggling treatment, a social life, a relationship, homework, and family while you're trying to fight your own brain, it's exhausting. Summer Wine helps me remember to slow down.

Lol I tried to suggest it to him as a stress reliever and he said he would stick to hitting the punching bag for that. Lol Then he asked if I've had any water today and I said yes (coffee and energy drinks technically have water in them! Lol) But I think I've got it figured out. Sometimes if he's had a particularly bad work week, he'll hit the punching bag while I'm there and I'll sit on the couch and play with my phone until he's done, so I'm thinking next time he's hitting the punching bag, I'll sit there and watch it and when he takes a break, he usually sits down next to me, so all I have to do is show him my phone!

I actually told my friend who is starting ICT to look it up on Dailymotion and I told her to watch anything after season 8 because that's when Marina was introduced and she's my favorite character and she told me she watched a few episodes and then she was like "No wonder Marina is your favorite character, you're just like her, you freak!" Lol Then she said she was going to start telling me to drink my coffee every time I tell her something inappropriate and I was like "Ok, Edie!" Lol I guess she watched some later episodes. Then we started talking about hair dye. He hair is dark brown (sort of like Glenda's color) and she's thinking of putting blue streaks in it and I told her to go for it because I think that would look pretty on her. I also told her if one more thing goes wrong, I'm dying my hair pink! Lol

So I suggested Summer Wine to my friend who was in the psych ward, she got out today, and she actually already likes it. She use to watch it when she could get PBS but she doesn't get PBS anymore so I told her where to find it on Dailymotion. I'm probably going to the psych ward next. My boyfriend and my mom think I should go but I'm going to try to hold off until my next therapy appointment and see what my therapist says. I'm not in immediate danger yet. Plus I just don't want to go because I don't like it there. Lol

I can really recommend watching the entire series from the very beginning to the end in order. It will take you a while but it's really enjoyable watching the passage of time and the evolution of the characters. I'm presently watching it all the way through for the second time!

You know, that's something I've actually never done before and I probably should! I've always just watched the episodes randomly! Lol

You can certainly watch the first dozen or so episodes in order on Dailymotion but then there is a few missing, if you like it you can always invest in the DVD boxset. It's about £60 over here so I'm guessing it'd cost you around $100 over there. But that probably works out at about 30 cents an episode which is a bargain in my opinion :D
