More people watching.........What is the best way to have a back pack?? I see people with them on their shoulder blades and others (mostly schoolkids) with them on their buttocks.! Either way looks most uncomfortable. Have we any ex-servicemen on the forum?? ??? Can you suggest a best way?

Good question dick. Sorry I do not have a good answer for you. There does seem to be a lot of inaccurate information from a quick web search. I don't know if it matters if the contents are books or camping gear in how the backpack should be loaded. Where is Foggy when you need him? He would know. Hopefully someone will chime in with some answers.

Cheers,
Rick

The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons' recommendations are here: http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=A00043. I have two quibbles with this.

They refer to the lower strap as a "waist strap". Unless that strap is meant only to prevent the bottom of the pack from swinging side to side, it's a hip strap and it's top edge should be at the top of the hip bones in order to transfer the weight of the pack to the leg muscles.

A sternum strap is also necessary to help distribute weight over the entire torso and to prevent the shoulder straps from drifting. It should be positioned halfway along the sternum to prevent interference with breathing and for maximum effectiveness.

I used to have a backpack at school the were not very comfortable to wear. I used to like skateboards we had a great time on them.

Most of the Kids these days seem to carry around backpacks the size of suitcases

Do you like to go wandering along the mountain track and as you go you like to sing with your knapsack on your back ??? Then Falderie, Faldera , bend your knees and not your ba-a-a-a-a-a-a-ack , you get no pain and stop the strain from the back pack on your back! :22:

Dick,

No didn't have a drop yesterday I just look for posts to which I can try and send a hopefully amusing response to , your post about how to best carry a back pack triggered the Folderie, Foldera song in my head so checked the lyrics and tailored the post based on them .
