Just back from a weekend away with three of the grandkids, had a great time. We took our two Autistic grandsons and their sister to give our daughter and son in law some respite, we were walking along the harbour at Great Yarmouth waiting for Elizabeth House to open and the boys were loving the ships, we were invited aboard a fishing trawler to have a look round and the kids loved it, the people on board were so friendly and answered all the kids questions, there are some really lovely people around. We went round Elizabeth House which was very child friendly, in the kitchen was this dollie tube and mangle, when I see these things the first thing I always think is "Thank god for electricity" Then I always think of Nora and Edie. 11119936_10206554326960234_183772571885287898_n.jpg

Yes, indeed! Washday must have been backbreaking. As I said in another post earlier today, the study of the history of 'ordinary' folks makes me grateful for contemporary amenities.

I don`t know you ladies have never had it so good.:me::wink:

I had a twin tube for a few years when we moved house I told him in doors there was no way it was coming with us so we got an automatic, I was so amazed by it my three kids and me sat on the floor in front of it and just watch it going round :D

Before we had the twin tub I hand washed, I used to use the taps to twist the larger items to wring them out, the taps ended up an upside down V shape in the end, I'd have welcomed a mangle back then. :21:

Shows how old I am, My mum had at first the old fashioned "copper" in an attached scullery. This meant on washday Monday you could barely see your hand in front of your face for the steam from the copper. (you lit a fire in the early morning in the scullery , just to boil the clothes. They turned out brilliant white!)
The later washes were done in a freestanding wash tub , the clothes were swirled by a back and forth handle on the top. I ought to have muscles like Arnold Scwartzenvinegar for the amount of time I did this chore.(don't know what went wrong :me:) We then went from that to the mangle. After a few years of this we finally got a twin tub. :16: My brother still had this twin tub a few years ago.(sentimental reasons:16:) We started with a twin tub when we got married and gradually we moved to an automatic.

You stopped doing it — that's what went wrong! (Well, actually, you stopped and didn't substitute another, similar exercise, probably at the great expense of a gym membership.)

I have a mangle the sort that fold downwards somehow and become a table, still got it in fact, I think it dates back to the twenties or thirties. you never know I might need it some day, its like chimneys I think its good to have a chimney in case something nasty happens and we don't have any more electricity armageddon or what ever !! At least then I can keep warm and wash and wring out me clothes !!

We'll where to come with our washing then ;)

Forgot something, before we got the twin tub we had a spin dryer. The sort that danced across the kitchen when it was up to speed.Like Arkwright had in O A H .:12::29:
