Compo's Military Service

Maybe I am missing something but in the Blamire era the trio often chatted and talked about Compo's war service, ribbing him that he spent his time in the cookhouse in Aldershot,Compo once replied he had a gun and he did not know he would not be asked to fight.

Yet years later we have a different story in the episode Last Post and Pigeon

I remember in a few episodes he briefly chats about getting in some mischief with a mate or two in the service. Also of him fancying a sturdy lass in the service that others were afraid to go near. I assumed he was talking about being on the continent.

Yep, I remember that was something that was slowly fleshed out over the years, but never very clearly. Then again that's not uncommon in real life; I have had special duties with some particularly well-known veterans over the past 17 years, many of whom would rather forget much of the war, with one infamous day in particular being particularly bad for this bunch.

Reconcile it in your mind if you like but it seems pretty clear to me that the consistent back story of the show was that Compo was never posted outside the U.K. until "Last Post . . ." decided to change that. There is even an early episode where Foggy says that he never left England.

Continuity was not a big concern of Clarke.

Compo also spoke in the Blamire era about him and a mate retreating faster than the others could advance !
