Continuing the Discussion on Spin Offs

Hello Folks,

In one of my last threads I discussed the idea of Clarke's writing interests. I am assuming by now you heard about the prequal to KUA. The BBC is supporting this, (I am always under the impression that the BBC does nothing but get in the way of Clarke). However, this support is generating from a movement to make a lot of spin offs of older shows to mark the 60th anniversary of Britain's first sitcom. One key question I have is how long will support for this prequal last?

Here is the link.

On a personal note, I would love to see this, but as much as I enjoy Hyacinth, my favorite thing about KUA is seeing how Richard is unwillingly dragged around, put into awkward circumstances, etc. I don't know how much a prequal would capture this. Hyacinth may not have even met Richard during the time of the prequal's setting.

I have to say I am not a KUA fan at all , if they opt for a prequel it would be great to contrast totally the values Hyacinth held in the series and portray her as a complete opposite to that character perhaps with an upbringing in a working class environment without the heirs and graces demonstrated in KUA. In my opinion , and based on the Still Open all Hours comments I posted, they should let these iconic, award winning sleeping dogs lie , there done with prequel or otherwise. Yes FOTSW and Rock and Chips [prequel to Only Fools and Horses ] worked to a certain extent but I just feel these shows should be left alone and remembered for the brilliant comedies they were . Look no further than some of the disastrous film remakes that have been made because Hollywood was short on new ideas.

Sounds interesting. Not sure what to think until seeing a few episodes. Says they are also interested in revisiting 'The Good Life' and 'Are You Being Served?' both shows I have enjoyed watching.

Please keep us updated if these go into production. Don't always hear news of this sort here in the States.

Cheers,
Rick

Funnily enough, I'd already considered a prequel to Keeping Up Appearances.

I had already decided it would be about Hyacinth as a young woman still living among her council house roots (for want of a better phrase).

My vision would see her GRADUALLY develop through the 60s, 70s and 80s to become what she was in the 90s.

I would of liked to have seen a Howard Pearl and Marina spin off, I think it would have been good.

I got this info from the states ..... Maryland Public Television! I assumed the Brit Brethren here knew about it.

I guess it is unfair to assume it would be as good as the original.

Clarke writing it could be great, but no telling what the directing and producing would do to it.

I would be interested in seeing what "Daddy" was like in earlier times and how Hyacinth and her sisters were when they were younger.

Intriguing thought.

Hyacinth, Violet, Daisy and Rose - but who would play their younger versions?
