Back in the day (this was before curling irons) when I was in college and it was previously an all-girls college, many girls would put there hair up in gray rollers and go to supper in the dining hall. You could look across the room and see this sea of girls with their rollers. The next year, as more guys showed up (it had become co-ed), the rollers suddenly disappeared.
