Just having my lunch today, my daughter walks in and see's that I am having smoked fish(Haddock)
She said it smelt nice but had I tasted Smoked Basa fillets. She got quite a shock when I told her that most of it is sourced in Vietnam. She is non political and just likes to support closer to home. She said that she would be going for cod or haddock in future(think of the carbon footprint )

Quite a few wet fish outlets have opened up in the Grainger Covered Market in the Centre of Newcastle which is great wish there were more. If I wanted really fresh fish before that had to drive 15 miles to North Shields to buy effectively straight off the boats. Once a month we have a farmers market and the produce is great, again I would have to drive some distance to buy from a farm shop. Interestingly on the food front has anyone noticed a rise in the press coverage for what they refer to as wonky veg i.e mis-shapen vegetables that the Farmers were basically ploughing back into the field because the Supermarkets [and to an extent the public] wanted perfect fruit and veg.

Asda seem to be the first to break the mould and they are now selling wonky veg by the box in some of their stores @ £3.50 and there seems to be enough to feed a family for a good few days . In these days where we have greater than ever numbers having to use Food Banks surely it makes sense to use this produce rather than destroy it . The same problem seems to exist with fish because of the quota system . Boats are dumping perfectly good fish overboard because if they kept they would exceed the quota , ridiculous.

Totally agree with on the wonky veg front, so its a bit wonky, not the "Ideal" shape or a bit small who cares it probably tastes better anyway. I've been thinking of nipping to Asda to try them, which is probably the idea behind it all anyway.

Pearl ,

I believe that its a trial by Asda so only in select stores , well worth checking their site to see if you local store is stocking to save a wasted journey. There was a guy stating that this fruit and veg without " influencing components" to make the product uniform and perfect will almost certainly have more flavour as those members who grow their own veg will no doubt testify.

I don't know about the UK, but here in the US much of the fish is farmed meaning that they raise fish in a screened box in the ocean or a in pond and feed the fish on a preplanned diet. Specifically Atlantic Salmon is always known to be farmed. It's possible that Vietnam fish is also farmed.

I don't know about farmed Vietnam fish. What worries me as well about it is the possibility of some of the chemical agents used during the war remaining in the water.. As I understand it Basa are bottom feeders ( I am willing to be proved wrong on this)

On the topic of fish what has happened to the large number of shops that sprung up [not sure if they originated in the US or spread there] with the Garra rufa fish giving people Pedicures . It seems to have been a fad that has faded, certainly all of those in Newcastle City Centre have closed [wonder what happened to the fish ? What are they doing in their well earned retirement , living at the seaside?] .

My mother in law was thrown out of the one in town .....................when she put her head in the tank! :16:

Compo should have gone to one of those shops for the hard skin on his "dancing" feet.
