Franks Thornton Looked after his Money

I watched him in his last appearance, Run For Your Wife, as mentioned in the article, last weekend.

Interestingly, he was in an exterior scene - not sure about insurance.

This film features Richard Briers and Bill Pertwee, again only just before they died.

Other Summer Wine faces include Jean Fergusson, June Whitfield, Russ Abbot, Brian Murphy, Lynda Baron, Bernard Cribbins, Lionel Blair.

Just curious about the laws in England.....how much of his estate will the family get to keep versus the government?

Almost £1.6million, which is quite remarkable when you think about it. What is he best known for? Are You Being Served and LOTSW. I doubt whether he was particularly well paid for the first, although relatively speaking it would have been good money compared to many professions at the time. He appeared in a lot of films early on in his career and I suspect they were not that well paid. I mean, if he had been paid a grand for a minor film role back in the 60's that would have been a lot of money back then, but peanuts in today's terms.

Most of the Carry on Stars were paid in the low thousands for their appearances, the best paid in those films was Phil Silvers and Elke Sommer who was paid £30,000 for her role in Carry On behind, 6 times what Sid James and Kenneth Williams ever got.

Hard to believe maybe, but Arnold Ridley of Godfrey fame was paid £63 per episode in the first series of Dads Army. John Le Mesurier was paid £261.10s per episode, Arthur Lowe and Clive Dunn £210, John Laurie £105, James Beck £78. Good money for the time maybe, but inflation means that it's nothing in today's terms. What's the going rate today and how much would someone in a main role in a sitcom like LOTSW make?

I'm wondering if he did commercials? That can pay well, often a lot more for one commercial than a whole tv series will pay.

He must have been a saver and invested his money well.

I have been reading George Cole's autobiography in which he mentions his first big film break playing Flash Harry in the St Trinians film, The Belles of St Trinians. He says he was paid £750 for that role, which was a lot of money in 1954, but doesn't sound like much today.
