Happy ever after

"Stability...three meals a day...and all your thinking done for you !!!"....a quote from our favourite philosophy student !!....[a.k.a. Cleggy...the man with a masters degree in "The University Of Life"]....."not a bad deal for cleaning a few windows"....BUT.....really speaking.....did Howard LOVE Pearl....but was IN LOVE with Marina ?????....OR....was it just the fact that Marina gave him the love affection and hugs that so eluded the "ICE MAIDEN"...[a.k.a. Pearl].
X! X! X! X! X!

Moodyblue I have to defend Pearl in this, people assume that Howard started to phillander because Pearl was a hard nosed madam with a resting witch face BUT how do we know it wasn't the other way round? She became a hard nosed madam with a resting witch face because she'd married a two timing manchild that was never going to happy no matter how many woman he had. Back in their day you didn't divorce your philandering husband because 1, you couldn't afford it and 2, divorced woman were labelled fast and loose whether it was their fault or not so once you married you had to make it last no matter what happened. I think she found out quickly in the marriage that he was a very unhappy manchild that was pining away for a 30 year old showgirl with fishnet stockings who played the harmonica and that she was his second choice.

Given the apparent sincerity of that scene he would certainly try to but Marina wouldn't let go without a fight and would attempt to get his jealousy roused. Eventually she'd give up and Mr Sibshaw would wax wistfully about his myriad encounters akin to Sid and a certain bus conductoress.

After the Howard /Marina liaisons progressed in the show I have to say that on the occasions when Marina had interest from other quarters such at Cyril in Beware the uniform or the fleeting instances when there was a dalliance with someone [for example when the iron fireplace gets dropped on the handcart propelling Barry to land on Marina] and the couple of occasions that Pearl was alleged to stray [in the pub kissing Shirley's] husband] I found it far more interesting and entertaining when jealously raged in Howard than all the ruses used to get Howard to meet her.

I really would have hoped that Howard, whilst retaining his desire for Marina, desisted from chasing her further because it would offer the chance to pair Marina with plenty of suitors[sadly only fleeting romances] and greatly annoy Howard though given he had changed his ways there was nothing he could do but fume .

Pearl........Howard was 16 when he was "pining away" for a 30 year old showgirl.....and let's be brutally honest.....throughout their decades of "philandering" I think Howard actually kissed Marina maybe twice......hardly "philandering"........and as far as we are all aware he only had a relationship with Marina....so we will never know how happy he would be "no matter how many women he had" to quote you.
Speaking as a "non philandering man" I just feel that Pearl just does not like men....she admitted as much when she told Cleggy she does not believe any man...when Cleggy said she must have had a bad romantic experience she stated..." I DID.....I GOT MARRIED !!!!!".......was it bad from day 1 ????....we will never know.....but she ALLOWS the "philandering" to continue....because she admitted to Glenda that she let's the Marina situation continue because if it didn't "he would be under my feet all day".
X!.

Howard , the dandy highwayman who Cleggy hates to mention
he spends his time avoiding Pearl and grabbing Marina's attention
The Devil[Pearl] hides his bike and his riding gear collection
The way he looks he is far too old to collect his old age pension.

Stranded and live with Pearl your trouble and your strife
Look in the Mirror it's either Marina or the Wife.
