At least two. The first Christmas special shows one outside Clegg's door at the end of the episode. Then the above episode where Howard is petting a cat. Oddly, a year or two later Howard and Pearl supposedly have a cat when Howard is supposed to dog sit, but we never see it.

There is a cat seen outside Howard's house during the opening titles of Ancient Eastern Wisdom An Introduction.
