The Old Woman.
This could be a rather curt description of many of the older female characters in Last of the Summer Wine, but there was one such person whose character was just that. Take a look ...
This is from the series 17 episode Desperate for a Duffield, shown on 6 October 1995. Notice anything? Yes, the aforementioned Old Woman, who is prominently in the background of several shots in the Café, more noticeable than many non-speaking background artists.
But why?
It was all part of a stunt for "The Friday Night Armistice" shown on 21 June 1966. They had a joke "competition" to find "The Old Woman" on tv. As well as Summer Wine, she appeared in an episode of "The Big Breakfast" among a group of people at an outside broadcast, and - barely visible - in the London Marathon live broadcast among the spectators on The Mall!
Thanks to Simon Dunn for this little tit-bit!
