Say for instance that someone wanted to make a big screen modern version of the worlds greatest comedy show.Whivh story line could they re-work and who could play the main parts.Would like your thoughts please.

I think your going to get a lot of suggestions for this one.
I'm going watch this thread very carefully :D
My chose would be:
Compo- Phil Davis
Clegg- Alun Armstrong
Third man- Larry Lamb

I will need to have a think about the ladies so I'll get back to you. :)

:D ;D Just for a laugh, can I suggest Denis Waterman and Amanda Redman as Howard and Marina?? Also maybe have James Bolam as Clegg?? ;)

Reference to Alun Armstrong (totally concur) made me think of the whole "New Trcks" team with James Bolam as third man and Dennis Waterman as Compo. Dennis Waterman maybe not quite right so how about Sean Hughes who played Mod Lewis in the Peter Davison version of Dangerous Davis, The Last Detective. May be problems with a Welsh Compo but Sean would have been a great guest star.

Yes Big Unc, Sean Huges would be great, I thought I was the only person who watched The Last Detective :D

I watched The Last Detective. I also have the film version.

If they were to make a film of Summer Wine, they should use the book Gala Week.

That would be a good choice as most episodes are too short as they are for a film.

"Gala Week" seems to be readily available on Amazon or Abebooks (in used copy anyway). Since cost is peanuts I decided to order it. Our library system has it only as audio book. Review on Amazon intrigued me:
"The book lived up to all expectations. Well written in the Yorkshire accent the book chronicles the week of her birthday and his idea of a gift that was unusual. Combine this with Seymour's gala exploits and the result is a strong, humorous and warm story typical of Summer wine and its characters."
Does not say who "she" is.

Also looked at "The Moonbather" - also readily available. That review was more complete:
"If you want to spend some time with Cleggy, Seymour and Compo, with appearances by Howard, Marina, and Nora Batty, you've got to pick up the Moonbather! Written by Roy Clarke himself, reading this feels just like watching an extended episode of Summer Wine! I could practically hear Clegg's voice, his mild tone occasionally filling with humor, as I read his dialog. If you're a fan of the later episodes, you may be disappointed not to find Truly, Entwhistle and others, but even so this is a hilarious read!
The Plot: Seymour intends to court a `young lady' (of around forty), but thinks his place is too far away. He insists on using Clegg's place, and when an angry Compo shows up at the party, along with a streaker the whole village (led by the lady's policeman fiancée) is after, things get a bit complicated and very funny!"

Interesting both books are from the Seymour era.

It is Nora's birthday and Compo decides to give her the loan of a peacock for the day. A lot of the situations could have been used in Big Day at ........... Sorry I forget where it was. Senior moment.

"Dream Acre" - I did wonder about that episode and its relationship to the book.

Thanks Big Unc. There are some similarities.

The two books turned up from Abebooks today. When will I have time to read them?

Had a right game finding this thread on which the books were discussed. Eventually resorted to searching on "The Moonbather". But all apropos of nothing, in the process I realised again that under the umbrella of "General Category" we have two Sub - Categories, "General Discussion" and this one, "About the series", and it really is highly haphazard into which of the two we put a particular thread when started new.
