John Inman

I am a little slow on picking up on things sometimes and I don't watch "Are You Being Served". However, I have seen glimpses of it and just realized today that Trevor Bannister was in it. He clearly looks so much different in it than from his Toby character. Of course it is a number of decades apart, but then Frank Thornton seemed to have changed so little in all that time apart. Did Thornton help get Bannister a role on Summer Wine (which started as guest appearances as the captain)?

Despite never getting into Being Served, I recognize John Inman as a great actor. Did he ever appear in Summer Wine as a guest? I looked it up and saw that he passed away in 2007. If he was still around and able, I wonder if Summer wine would have picked him during the 2008-2010 years when they went through so many changes.

Just a thought.

I really disliked Are You Being Served I think mainly because it became the John Inman show.Sorry if I upset any fans of the show but that is how I felt about the show.

No offense taken. I never got into it because it seemed like it partially because of the "posh/metro" store environment. I just catch glimpses of it when it follows As Time Goes By. However, in my few glances of it I think Mr. Humphries (played by John Inman) is quite funny. I could imagine him playing a good role on Summer Wine.

I agree with George as the show got bigger Inman became the bigger star and the show started to get built around him.I was'nt the biggest fan but the show did
give us Summer wine stars of the future in Thornton and Bannister and i think Frank Thornton also starred in the spin off series grace and favor.

Frank didnt help Trevor get a part in LOTSW,Trevor was in Summer Wine 5 years before Frank's debut.Inman's tenuous link with the show was being a cousin of Josephine Tewson who he co-starred with in Odd Man Out

Are you being served was however, quite a true portrayal of that type of store. I worked in not dis-similar surroundings in the 1960s when I sold menswear (my first career) and was often asked "Are you free Mr ..." or when a customer entered I was told to "go forward Mr T...."

For me, the humour is that it wraps up what was afairly unexciting job in an amusing way - I will admit that it is now dated but so was the shops I worked in. Hand cranked telephone system, spike for copies of the sales dockets, everything in drawers, canvas blinds that were brought down to protct gods from too much sun and possible fading inthe window. Trousers were folded in piles, not hung up, ties were folded in drawers and about six types of underwear, acording to weight!

Are you being served was one of those types that i liked well enough but was never a "must see".I would agree with the comment about the John Inman show as it seemed that a lot of the later shows were built around him.
I have wondered a few times why i have never seen it repeated even though it was a very popular show. The film has been on a few times but i dont really like it that much.Maybe its a bit like,It Aint Half Hot Mum and not considered to be very "pc" now.

Hector.

The show certainly is a staple on American Public Television. However, it always seemed so "dated" to me and not relevant. As for Summer wine, like everyone else in this forum there certainly is a timeless quality to the show that makes it seem like it will be valued forever.
