Midges

How many episodes have you spotted that when they are filming the cast are suffering with an attack of midges, they must be bad if the camera picks them up, I noticed when they were beside the river bank in " From Wellies to Wetsuit" there are lots flying around and the temptation must be to wave them away, I also noticed them in an episode outside Cleggy's but cannot recall the title

There are so many Rivers in Yorkshire Swale , Aire , Ouse and therefore the abundance of midges and other insects when filming is guaranteed . Of course one river stands head and shoulders above the rest and is famous for the little creatures I of course speak of ......................... Midge(s) Ure

I have noticed a few times that there were bugs about in some scenes. Did not know they were midges. Heard the term before and had to look up what they are. Seems they are like mosquitoes but without the beak to stab you with, yet none the less annoying.

There's many species, and variations on the standard mosquito model. Down here we have the "Blandford Fly". I'm not certain if it bites, but I believe it sits around the eyes of cattle and make their lives a misery.

of course their local river would be either the Calder or the Holme I think ...

The actors and actresses probably had to put up with a lot of discomfort during outdoor scenes and their greatest acting accomplishment was not being in character or remembering lines, but not responding to flying insects, cold, wind, etc. while filming unless indicated in the script. And especially the ladies, who at first did not have the luxury of a caravan, only a car or a warm seat on a cold stone wall.
