I have just been in Dusseldorf for a few days and the waiters deposit a bowl of bread on your table as soon as you sit down no matter how ritzy the restaurant and some of those dishes you mention are replicated in any number of their food establishments . The most popular dish is Pork Knuckle but boy do you have to be hungry to eat it it , too much for me but they are big on stews and of course sausages of real quality .
I think you sometimes have to look long and hard in this country to find traditional food but it is getting better . When I was working I was regularly down in Lancashire staying in various hotels I could get Thai Curry , Chicken Bhuna , Spaghetti Carbonara but ask if the have any hotpot or black pudding and you are met with a blank stare .

We got back from ST Ives on the 5th. All week I had been fancying Bangers and Mash but none of the restaurants in the town seemed to have it on the menu , a couple of them served it on the children's menu but they were small sausage to go with the small portions.
I finally got proper sausage and mash on the evening of the 4th at a family run pub outside of town on the way back to the cottage we rented. Thoroughly enjoyed it.!

Reminds me of the best bangers and mash I've had to date. It was at the Friends House restaurant, London, Euston Road. Don't know whether or not they serve it routinely, though.
