Return to Holmfirth

I'm sure Wallace from 'Wallace and Grommit' would be envious of your trip to the Wensleydale cheese factory Chuck. Given his penchant for cheeses. :)

Hope you all have a great time on your trips - Amos and Chuck. Chuck been meaning to shoot you an email about Dad's Army for some time. Just keep getting sidetracked and forgetting.

Cheers,
Rick

If you have watched the original series you may be disappointed . I am a great fan and I went with an open mind but I was disappointed , the script if weak in content there are some amusing moments but at the cinema where I viewed no one in the audience that day laughed out loud , although as Frankie Howerd said there were a few titters missus . I imagine it will be out on DVD soon but it is not worth buying until it hits the bargain basement.

There was a lot of publicity for it in the UK but the reviews were not great so I imagine the torrent sites have avoided it . The most damming thing for me was the writers implied in one segment of the script that Jones wasn't what he purports to be and that was nothing short of criminal from my viewpoint , make the film by all means but don't taint people's memories of the original .

Yes, understand, but still want to watch it.

But cannot find a really downloadable torrent file. Most look
like scams.

Unless there is a really wonderful tie-in, the spin-off or revamp of the original series rarely will work. Inspector Lewis worked mainly because they used the same characters, music, producers, etc. as had been used in Inspector Morse.

I am finally getting to return to Summerwine land in early August. Any suggestions about other places in or around Holmfirh apart from sids café and Noras.
Amos

would suggest a visit to Marsden where quite a few scenes were filmed, especially those involving the canal and Auntie Wainwrights. Also nearer the tunnel end (of the canals andf railways) is the famous bridge. As tery stated the guide gives you quite a few choices.

Thanks for all your replies. I have done marsden so might not go again but I like the sound of Hawes. Might go further afield and visit other parts of Yorkshire. such as Thirsk. Has anyone been there.

Hello Amos hope you are well , I recently had a three day bus trip holiday to the Yorkshire Dales stayed in Bramhope as a base but trip included a canal boat ride on the Canal at Skipton it has a well preserved Castle and a market recommend the Wooly Sheep Inn for some respite lovely open wood fire if its a cold day. In addition to Hawes we visited Grassington both are quaint villages with great character and some interesting history .

On the final day we took a trip on the Embsay steam railway from Embsay to Bolton Abbey although only a short trip it was so interesting and nostalgic to see the restored stations and all of the memorabilia, very similar to the station at Howarth . The countryside to me is second to none it is so ornate . I am always amazed that you pass through so many villages which are all so quaint, often only a few houses, but everyone seems to have a Pub or Inn. I don't know how they survive it can only be bolstered by passing trade .

Thirsk is a nice place but I was immensely frustrated when I was there ....... I was playing golf enough said.

Thirsk is very pleasant, about 45 miles from me off A61 from Ripon.

Known especially as the place wherer Alf Wight practised as vet, although he called himself James Herriot for the books. Have been in the house once owned by the lady who was the basis of Mrs Pumphrey with the Pekingnese. She really did overfeed it and it had to be taken away to get back to health by the vet - so some of the tories are very true.

When they filmed "All Creatures Great and Small," they actually used the actually house and town for the outdoor shots.
