RIP Grouty

Another sad death, this time the great actor Peter Vaughan.

Peter was best known as Grouty in Porridge, Mr Johnson in the first two series of Citizen Smith, and also starred in Our Friends from the North.

He also appeared in countless other programmes, some quite recent.

He was 93.

(Why did Grouty and Mackay never have any scenes together?)

I put a line about Grouty passing away on the Shoutbox on Tuesday . I love the scene from the Boxing match episode when Grouty summons Fletch to his cell to discuss nobbling one of the matches so he can win a bet . Grouty is listening to the Archers and Fletch chirps up " I didn't think anyone was allowed a radio in their cell " with Grouty replying " Really , well no one told me " and Fletch responding " I suppose nobody would dare" . Grouty goes onto say that he used to keep a Pigeon when he was in Parkhurst until he was released . Fletch enquires what happened to the pigeon " I eat it " . Just then Grouty's sidekick Jackdaw comes in to which Fletch utters " You'd better watch out Jackdaw!" . Classic comedy at its very best . Sad to see another iconic actor pass away.

Hard to believe he was only in three episodes of Porridge, plus the film. It's because of his brilliant performances which were so memorable that make it seem more.

I didn't realise he had appeared in Game of Thrones, in his late 80s and early 90s.

He certainly remained a busy actor.
