LOTSW Fanatic
Just been to my local Asda. The small packs of anything/everything have disappeared off the shelves. I don't know how other singletons go on but I tend to finish up giving my daughters anything I have that's close to sell by date but still a lot left. :02::confused:

I have the same trouble with my dad's shopping. I have to travel round to buy small tins of the stuff he likes or if they do small anythings it's usually on the very top shelf where short people and/or the elderly can't reach.

My son is single, I am not sure what he get's up to but I think he eat's ot of take away's Pizza Hut Burger King despite me teaching him the basic's.

That's boys for you, mines the same but I make sure he has a Sunday dinner and veg at least twice a week.

I've learned to live with the larger packages - I just divide things up and freeze things. But I hate how they put everything I want on the top shelf. I'm naturally short and now use the electric carts so that makes me even shorter. I use a grab stick but even still have to ask for help when they pack things so tight you can't get them out.

That's exactly their plan. They put the stuff they really want you to buy in the middle and the stuff they don't want you to see and buy on the top and bottom shelves. They also put items on the ends that they want to move. So half the battle is already won, when you're in an electric cart you can really see what's on the bottom shelf. And to reach stuff on the top shelf? That's what the supermarket clerks are there for.

Another note is that you must contact the store management and tell them specifically what they used to carry and state that you need that exact product and to purchase the larger size will cause unneeded waste. State that it is environmentally friendly to carry the smaller sizes. Who can argue with something this supports the environment. If that doesn't work, shop at smaller markets, farmer's markets, and online venues.

Something else that always bugged me everything comes in packs of 4 or 6 coming from a family 5 and having a family of 5 its darn well annoying!

Why is it, I get to the check out bags at the ready, wallet to hand and then make a right boghole of packing and paying?? ::) :-[

I now take my Mam shopping as she no longer drives but I flatly refuse to go around with her . The first time I took her to Morrisons she decided she wanted some potatoes and carrots but there were the only pre-packed bags . She duly collared a guy working on the Fruit and Veg and asked if there were any loose potatoes and carrots .

The guy said he had some in the Warehouse [ but clearly didn't really want to go and fetch them ] , after some cajoling he eventually carried out a big sack of carrots and then went back for similar in respect of the spuds. He then cut the backs open and tipped them into the respective bays spilling a few of each which he crawled on the floor to retrieve , by which time he was only missing amber to be the complete traffic light , red face , green uniform .

My Mam thanked him to which he replied " I will get you a couple of bags and get you some nice carrots and potatoes how many of each do you want " , to which Mam said one potato and one carrot [ more than enough to make her a small stew] . I cannot describe how embarrassed I felt and as for the guy I can only imagine what he was thinking . Now I let her get on with it and naff off to the Cafe until she has finished.

Yes I too have this problem. Butter or margarine will be out of date before I have half finished the pack.

Today - two packs of rolls for £1.50 or one pack for £1. Or one bakers had four rolls for £1.17 or two packs for £1!!!

They risk going stale before all eaten - and I am never that good at freezing things.

How long can I leave it in the freezer? I have had meat decidedly off when thawed out.

How long to defrost bread?
Will it taste and feel the same?
Will the thick slices still be soft on the inside when I toast them after freezing and defrosting?

Is the cost of freezing etc greater or less than just throwing away what you can not use?

My Good Housekeeping Cookbook does not tell me.

There must be an app for that (or at least a web site or several).

Freezing bread was never really an option for me having 3 healthy kids in the house it never lasted long enough to even think about freezing it, in fact I struggled to keep up with demand. ( I blame myself for marrying an Irishman, they're like bottomless pits and the kids took after him) And as soon as the kids left the grandkids started turning up and they all inherited their mother's bottomless pits, when the kids are here I go through a loaf or more a day. But my dad has had a go at freezing bread and it never really tastes the same unless you use it for toast, it only takes a couple of hours to thore 4/5 slices. I wouldn't leave it in the freezer for more than a couple of months.

My son would eat most of a loaf with a cooked meal (especially his mothers stews/casseroles). He grew to 6 feet 4 inches so there may be something in eating lots of bread!:16:;D

My sister doe's most of her shopping online she doe's not go to the shop's very often.

When at home I was always being told to eat up my burnt toast because it would help my hair go curly , it didn't take long to catch on to that ruse, my mam didn't want to waste the bread despite her prolific aptitude for burning toast! :16:
