Still Open all Hours

I see they start filming series 2 next week, this weekend they dress the hairdressers shop up and turn it into Arkwright's, as it is not that far from me I will try and get up there and see the action

Thank you for the update. Are you intending going to view of the filming or can you not get close enough to make it worth the visit . It would be great to see some
in- production shots but I imagine that they ban cameras to prevent people leaking snippets of the plot.

Did anyone watch sky gold this past week. They are showing the first series of open all hours, Ronnie Barker is brilliant as Arkwright.

I do hope to get there towards the end of next week, last year there was many snippets on the web taken by folk getting their camera's out

I have seen several times over but that does not detract from the quality of Roy Clarke's writing and Ronnie Barker/David Jason's acting ability I could watch them at any time which is much the case with LOTSW [the very last series was in earlier today] . It pleases me and also induces great bouts of laughter when UK Gold find ways of advertising and repeating what is effectively the same shows they have been showing since the inception of the channel . The latest is "Great after Eight" which I believe covers Only Fools and Horses, Porridge, Open All Hours and Blackadder , there will then be a break in transmission and they will effectively come back with a new slogan to show the shows again .

I am not complaining, it means if I wish to watch a classic show I am pretty sure I can catch an episode on the channel but as BBC Worldwide own at least half of the UKTV franchise you think they would be able to look at raiding the archives for other classics [ It ain't half hot mum [understand the issues about some of the content not being PC but they show other shows which have questionable content such as Steptoe and Son] , Hi De Hi , Oh Doctor Beeching , You Rang Me Lord [ people may not view the latter two as classics but they would be nice to see again] . Are you being served has been shown early afternoon on BBC" but it would be nice to see in an evening slot . There are others I am sure people could contribute to this thread , it has been mentioned before that maybe the Beeb may have sold programmes abroad and are somehow restricted in being able to show on this channel but it would be nice to see some of these forgotten shows again . Older shows such as Hancock must have available episodes . My one joy is that BBC Iplayer Radio has such classics available to listen to something I regularly do.

Many of those you mention are available on DVD, I have them such as Hancock, lot of the Croft and Perry material and Croft with others as well. Not sure what was questionable about the pair in Oil Drum Lane? Perhaps Captain C could elucidate?

I was really thinking about some of the dialogue is Steptoe there are some terms /phrases they use which today are not acceptable and are deemed offensive . I saw a snippet of a show on C4 , I think , where they are revisiting old shows and have various Z list celebs and journalists commenting on the content. A lot is shocking from a racist, sexist and religious perspective and that is what I was intimating for some of the shows I mentioned . Clearly I do not wish to repeat any examples for obvious reasons.

It generates a real argument because in the era that some of these shows were produced some of the terminology used was common place and sadly accepted by society at the time but now people quite rightly find it abhorrent . It must be a dilemma for UK Gold and those channels who broadcast this older content do they try to use clever editing the remove offensive content or do they simply not broadcast the shows .

What I don't understand is why I find a modern day sitcom from these 'politically correct' days MORE OFFENSIVE than a vintage sitcom now deemed non-pc.

When did you last see a modern sitcom without bad language, or sex talk, and before 9pm?

I find modern sitcoms quite 'revolting', actually.

If modern sitcoms ARE pc, then why are they all so unsuitable for children?

It seems to me modern sitcoms still feature suggestiveness, racism and homosexuality - and not in a positive way.

So how exactly are the new sitcoms and comedy shows pc?

To add to the conversation, Steptoe and Son was turned into Sanford and Son here in the US, the only difference being that they were black instead of being Jewish. Sanford and Son depicted life in a junkshop in the Watts (ghetto) part of Los Angeles and by all standards the show was pretty tame with all of the standard black clichés. I saw one episode of Steptoe and Son and it was pretty interesting.

I won't quote an example in full but if you consider It ain't half hot mum there was a real objection to our beloved Blamire , Michael Bates , portraying an Indian servant to the concert party Rangi Ram and that is why they will not show it . I have also , as an aside , read an article that in the De Montford Hall Leicester this years panto is Snow White and they have axed the Dwarfs from the title and the show for fear of offending the audiences and making people going feeling uncomfortable .

The tale was written in 1812 and has been billed as written all that time . Interestingly they got a quote from Actor Warwick Davis and he is angry because he thinks the stance is patronising when people are offended on our behalf . He thinks they should ask the potential actors whether or not they wish to appear not make their minds up for them .

C4 showed It was Alright in the 80s within which people cringed at some of the things shown as acceptable then, if you are interested in seeing its available on catch up

They forget though that Michael Bates was actually born in India.

They also forget the show was based on one of the writer's real life experiences.

I don't find the programme offensive in the least.

I find it very funny, entertaining, educational, charming, and good clean entertainment that the whole family can sit down together to.

What comedy programme nowadays can boast that?

My comedy hero, Spike Milligan, was brought up in India with all the chances and reasons to be totally NON PC. Some of his creations were caricatures of Indian people, but look at the affection he is remembered with!! :respect:

Why can't an actor play an Indian??

I've seen actors play Americans, and Australians, and all kinds.

A good, traditional actor should be able to play all sorts of different people.

Too many actors now can only play themselves.

I think the pc brigade make matters worse than they would be, I think they problems which wasn't there before.

The problem was that he played the part in very dark makeup. If he had played it in makeup that enhanced his natural skin color, I doubt that there would be any objections. There's seldom an objection to imitating an accent, but imitating skin pigmentation harks back to white men performing minstrel shows in black face, which would be highly offensive now, and should also have been at the time, as it mocked an entire race.

So the programme isn't shown because of an accident/deliberate mistake with the make-up?

If the make-up wasn't the right colour that does show a lack of thought at best. Maybe this was an ill-advised attemp to portray Indians as how the British THINK Indians look like. I wouldn't like to say.

It is common for countries to portray the people of other countries in a totally different or stereotypical way.

(Look at how the English are portrayed in American films - notoriously inaccurate usually, more so in the old days.)

Either way, I don't feel there was anything particularly wrong with It Ain't Half Hot Mum.

One last stone in the pond from me. Just look at westerns and how many "white" people have played native Americans in the past.:22:

Cochise and Geronimo have been played numerous times by numerous nationalities.
