Summerwine pretty much gone from YouTube (in the US); looking for alternative access

I figured it would eventually happen, but it looks like most of the Summerwine episodes on YouTube have now been removed or blocked for US viewers. I say "blocked" because most of the episodes on the established channels now say "Not available in your country." This presumably means the US rights holder has stepped in and asked YouTube to block access.

Outside of paying for the dubious official US DVDs, what alternatives does a US viewer have at this point? There are some "grey market" options, but I kind of view that as a last resort. I'd also love it if I could access the show via 'net streaming, which was one of the big advantages of it being on YouTube. But there is no sign of Summerwine on the major streaming services here.

Also, does anyone know who has the US rights? I'd like to contact them and see if this move to block YouTube is in preparation of something coming, perhaps a move to a streaming service.

Buy the UK (Region 2) DVDs and one of the many very inexpensive region-free players available on Amazon. Some might consider those players as grey-market because they've been restored to their as-manufactured state, with the region not set. It's true that the alteration voids the warranty, but if there are going to be any problems, they're most likely to occur after the warranty would have expired. I'm on my third one — they eventually wear out — but that takes a long time. Folks who are uncomfortable with the altered players probably could import a region 2 player from the UK, plug in a 220 to 110 voltage converter, add a UK to US plug adapter and play their region 2 discs.

The US disc case inserts don't say who owns the US rights, but they're distributed by Warner Home Video. The URL is www.bbcamerica.com. I expect that if the series were streamed in the States, there would be the same omissions as there are from the discs that others on the forum have reported.

I do not know anything about the rights other than when they are taken down from Youtube it is always due to "copyright".

Have you tried the DailyMotion site? I believe Kyle Roberts is adding his there - Link to Kyle's site: http://www.dailymotion.com/kylerob192

I too purchased region free DVD players and the DVD's from Amazon UK site. I am on my second DVD player in about nine years. I use mine every day for several hours. I do not have the whole DVD collection but have purchased quite a few.
 
Warner apparently launched their own streaming service last year but it does not currently offer LOTSW and I don't see any way of contacting them to see if its in their future. I'm also not clear if they would have streaming video rights for a BBC show anyway. My hope has been that they (or whomever) is cracking down on YouTube in preparation of offering the series in another form, and that its not just a push to sell more DVDs.

Its not that I can't afford to get the DVDs, its that I'm not sure I want to invest in what is basically "old" tech at this point. I'm almost 45 but even I realize the future is streaming content, not physical disks and players.

There are some BBC shows on Netflix, but that's the only place I've seen anything from them among the major US streaming services.

I will be honest, I'd probably get real giddy if I heard Netflix was planning on offering the entire (or most) of The Last Of The Summer Wine for Instant Streaming. Unfortunately, besides the dwindling Summer Wine material on YouTube and the few episodes that are posted elsewhere on the internet, the only other alternatives would be the DVDs.

In my opinion, while DVDs are pretty much starting to go the way of the VHS, they are still being used and sold by lots of individuals. Thus, I myself don't consider them obsolete. And while I do understand that streaming is becoming more popular nowadays, if you really wish to watch Summer Wine at your own leisure, purchasing the DVDs might be the best option for now. I'm not sure how long it would be before they would offer Summer Wine for streaming but this way, you won't have to worry about the connection lagging and the show taking a while to load. :)

It's up to you, though.

And this is gonna be slightly off-topic but it is related to the DVDs. I'm still a bit peeved at the blatant mistake that they made on the US Vintage 1988-1989 DVD. Someone had to have known what they were doing when they put together that cover and it's too bad they didn't go back and fix it.

Okay. There's a picture of Cleggy with Truly and Billy on this cover and as we know, Truly and Billy were not in either Series 10 or 11. So far, they've done a good job having photos relevant to the corresponding series on the previous covers but I guess whoever was in charge of this one must have gotten the wrong information or something.

Either way, while it's not so bad to make me not want to buy it, I just thought it was unfortunate that someone wasn't really paying attention in this regard.
 
Arr we have Compo Clegg and Seymour on ours, that is a bad mistake to make, that's way off.
 
I've got seasons one through the season when Bill Owen died. All of the discs are from Amazon UK. I also have a few of the North American releases too from when I first started my collection. As my TV doubles as my Computer monitor also (40" LED), I've went ahead and ripped all of the DVDs to my portable hard drive. It took me quite a few hours but it was worth it. Now the discs are put away so they don't get scratched and what not and when I want to watch an episode, I just use Media player classic. Not "streaming" video in the truest sense of the word but close enough.
 
Yeah the fact that Summer Wine isn't on YouTube anymore is a real problem for me since I like to watch it when I come home from work. It helps me relax and get my mind off of things so I'm gonna need that to be fixed. Or a least a way to watch it without the DVDs since my laptop doesn't have a DVD drive and the one I have to plug into it isn't very reliable.

It just rips them as vobs. I could use Nero to convert each vob into an avi/mp4 file but it's too much work for me. I actually did a few years back with seasons 1,2,3 and 4 and it took forever. Once I started using my TV as a second screen for my laptop, I just left the files as is and used Windows media player classic to play them. That way I still have the title menu available like a physical DVD would have. The old Divx converter I had would also convert each vob into some type of an avi file but again, it just took so long to do even one epsiode.
 
This might sound really crazy coming from someone so young ( since I was born in the age of technology ) but how do you make the tv into a computer screen? My laptop screen is a dillweed ( I don't think what I'd like to call it is safe for a family oriented site! Lol ) so it would be cool if I could figure out how to do that.

Most laptops have some form of video output,the earlier ones had a VGA output,the later ones a HDMI output,most Modern TV's have a HDMI input so with the HDMI from the laptop connected to TV input you can see what is on the laptop on your TV
 
I have had all my losw episodes along with other TV shows we enjoy on a NAS box,I use this one http://www.synology.com/en-global/products/DS414 this will hold 4 hard discs, this is connected to the router via a network cable,I then use this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sumvision-Cyclone-Micro-Media-Player-Black/dp/B00K2VLSL2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1409300490&sr=8-2&keywords=cyclone+media+player which is a wireless streaming player and connected to the TV,this will play anything stored on the NAS box
