My favourite character on TV was the little Jack Russell terrier in Midsomer Murders, 'Sykes'. That little dog, who had been in many films, appeared in 29 episodes of Midsomer Murders and had quite a following. I was hooked by the little guy and searched many hours on the net for a JRT rescue dog. Last year we found one and promptly bought him. He is black and white and as cute as Sykes. Our little JRT had been christened Jack. He would run to the telly and bark at Sykes whenever he appeared. If Sykes was on and Jack didn't see him we would say, 'Sykes is on Jack' and he would run to the TV. We wouldn't change the name of our little dog, he was called Jack from a puppy when he was born ten years ago. It was Jack's birthday June the 4th, he had been with us one year. On June the 5th, he went outside for a pee. I shouted 'JACK' for him to come back in. He completely ignored me. I called again another couple of times and still no reaction. In desperation I shouted SYKES. He promptly turned round, eyes wide open and ears upright except for the tips. He came running to me. A while later, while he was snoozing, I called 'Jack'. He carried on snoozing. I called 'Sykes' and he woke up, eyes open wide and ears up again. When we talk to him now he will only respond to the name, Sykes. He has chosen a new name for himself. I wondered how the TV Sykes was doing so I looked him up. He was retired in 2016 but sadly died at the age of 16 in September 2019. He was the best thing on telly. Here are a couple of pics of Sykes and Sir Jack Sykes 2.
