Any of you seen The Doctor Blake Mysteries?? Just stumbled on a few
of them on ThePirateBay and am downloading them. Appear to
be about an Aussie doctor solving mysteries. Maybe try one tonight.

The Doctor Blake Mysteries are indeed an Australian period (1950's) amateur detective type series. They are fairly recently done and from memory there have been 2 series so far. I think there will be more to come.
Basically Dr. Blake is an Australian country doctor (In Ballarat I think) who is also the police surgeon and so gets called in to consult on murders.

There is a complicated back story to the doctor which gets revealed slowly over the course of the series and of course he is always smarter than the police and so solves everything for them, which doesn't always make him popular.

I wouldn't say they make riveting viewing, however they do make a pleasant change from the usual brain dead shoot-em-up, explode everything cop shows that come from America lately.

I quite enjoy watching them for a little entertainment.

Some interesting notes.
1. He adroitly manages to make his life his own despite the fact that he lives in the same house he grew up in, he is operating his father's medical practice and he is driving his father's car.
2. Amazingly the housekeeping is incredibly young.

3. What I meant to say is that the housekeeper who was supposed to have been his father's housekeeper is incredibly young. She looks 38, but for intents and purposes, she should be more like 83.
4. And, of course, the themes simmering in the background are -- will the good doctor fall in love with the nurse or the housekeeper? Will he find his daughter?
5. And the odd thing is that the nurse and the cop both live with the doctor.

Just wait until it gets REALLY complicated8), lets just say Military Intelligence, new cop, return of old cop, new boss, return of new boss, corruption..oh yes and in almost every episode the doc gets "fired" only to get reinstated.
Add in a District nurse, Masons, the Japanese invasion of Singapore, visits to China and more......Oh yes not forgetting the murders he solves every week!

If this series tickles your fancy, you might also try the "Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries", set in Australia just after WW1.

It's great how some of us have searched the web for TV content, which goes to show we are really fed up of the constant drivel produced by broadcasters these days, being in my mid 60's I suspect it was because in the 60/70/80's we were spoilt with good quality shows, weekend TV was often worth being home for, these days it's all reality rubbish

I know folk who have sky TV and they complain about the content and cost yet continue to pay for it,makes no sense to me

I suspect that is because we had 3 channels in the 70's so the programmers had real competition to get good TV shows on but now its just " Fill air time" mentally.

Terry, you just don't know! We here in the US have nothing of value to watch
except the few BBC/ITV programs we get on our "educational" network.
US TV is all loud, flashy, and violent.

I have to download everything we watch as torrent files, save them as
AVI files to flash drives, and play them thru the DVD player to the TV.
It's a royal pain!

We are very lucky that we really do like Heartbeat, The Royal, Lewis,
Vera, New Tricks, Doctor Who (older the better), Downton Abbey,
The Yorkshire Vet, Flockstars, etc. I have about 7 flash drives ready
to go and hard drives just full of stuff.
