Thoughts on Ironing Day and Last Post And Pigeon

The former episode worked well IMO,with for the most part,a duo rather than a trio, good to see Roy tinkered with the format. As for the latter,a very poigant episode but in The Glory Hole(IIRC)Compo said he spent the war in Aldershot.Could have been after his return from France I suppose. Also, was it the only episode Eli didnt appear in during his time on the show?

I think Eli was still appearing up to and including series 22. He died in 2003.

I liked Last Post and Pigeon it had a lot of warmth about it, although it was very sad to see how Bill Owen's health had taken its toll.

I am not sure but didn't Danny O'Dea and Gordon Wharmby die in the same year as each other, alas two brilliant characters lost.

Gordon Wharmby died in 2002,Danny died the following year, same year as Thora Hird and Tony Capstick who played one of the pc's

Kind of hard to watch seeing as how it was Compo's swan song. The show, although still good and well written, didn't quite have the same impact after his passing. Such was the pivotal nature of the character of Compo to the series as a whole.

I aggree its a hard one to watch, I have to be in a really good mood to be able to watch it, even then I only get half way though. I'veseen the end once and that was enough for me, to to sad.

I'm the same Susan, it's an episode I cant watch. Ive only seen it all the way through once and that was enough.

I am deprived of the hour long special but I long to see Last Post and Pigon. I only saw clips of it in Its Never Ten Years and it looks so good. The sadness for me around Bill Owens death elegy for Fallen Wellies to Just a Small Funeral, when Compo is actually gone. The part that grabs my heart a bit is the opening credits to only see Frank Thornton and Peter Sallis' names to start.

I don't recall Ironing Day, I must have missed that one recently.

I THINK ive got it all, let me know if not

Thanks so much Pauline,

I am not used to watching full length programs on Youtube but I will view these. There has been so much talk about Getting Sam Home lately so I will get to see it out of curiosity. I certainly look forward to Last Post and Pigeon!

no problem - im not sure if thats still on youtube - but do you want me to find it too?

Lost Post & Pigeon is another one of the "specials" that the American PBS broadcasts consistantly skip, so I've never seen it either. I'm tempted to buy the PAL discs that just recently came out to see it. I also saw clips of "Lost Post..." in the "It's Never 10 Years" episode, it does look like a good one, though a bit odd again. Would Clegg so willingly go off to France for a visit? Seems to me he's too much of a homebody to take off to foreign lands. Like Getting Sam Home, this seems out of character for these characters.
