The scene when the pull up at Seymour's house for the first time in Wesley's banger, they get out of the car and there is smoke everywhere, they chat outside the car in all this smoke,then all of a sudden it's all gone

I guess there was a gap in filming and contnuity did not notice.

Smoke coming out the car was the least of their worries. Gordon Wharmby was a bag of nerves and was not available for some of the scenes in which he was due to appear. Thanks to clever editing and other tricks of the trade you can barely notice that there was a problem.
