Does it keep them waterproof because sometimes it doesn't seem to work post catching because the number of soggy fish and chip suppers I have had over the years yes post skinful are considerable.

Our breathing like fish breathing is a particular chemical/physical reaction where elements that are used are harmonious to sustaining life. I'm no chemist or biologist so...just a guess, memory of school books etc.
Reminds me of when Fr Christmas number 1 [Seymour] was trying to rip Compo's Santa beard off in Cleggy's [ in CRUMS].......
our scruffy little Santa was screaming and moaning and Cleggy said..."it's Captain Birdseye !!!!!"....to which Compo did his customary "V SIGN" infront of Cleggy..........Cleggy looked and stated " OOOOHHHH LOOK.....FISHY FINGERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!".
