Where Are They ??

Just re-watching the whole series from the beginning, and we are
in and around Series 6. We are now seeing more and more scenes
in Clegg's living room (??) but do not know where he is living now.
Certainly not the place next to Howard's. Well before that.

So where was/were Clegg's early living quarters located???

thanks

chuck

He was living above the clock tower, and Howard was two doors down. In real life, the neighbor in the middle was not thrilled with all of the lights, camera, and action, or so she said. Plus there was not a whole lot of room for the equipment and this neighbor, who by the way used to work for the BBC, demanded an extraordinary amount of compensation which could not be accommodated. Hence the move which was a blessing disguise with more room for the equipment, etc.

We see the outside of Clegg's house in Hail Smiling Morn and at the very end of Small Tune on a Penny Wassail.

The studio scenery of the interior varies a bit between Series 1-6.

Then from Getting Sam Home to the middle of Series 12 he is seen living near the clock tower, which we soon discover is nextdoor but one to Howard.

In Getting Sam Home we see the real interior of this house.

Other times it is a studio scenery set-up.

From the middle of Series 12 to the very end he is seen living at 'the other place', behind The White Horse, and living nextdoor to Howard as they have been 're-housed'.

For this property the scenery reflecting the interior remained quite consistent throughout.

More specifically, Cleggs first house was up on the hill behind the church next to the cafe. As Adanor notes, Howard and Pearl were put into the same complex when introduced in series 8. The locations tool located on the front page of this sight will show you the exact location used for exterior shots.

Internal consistency is another matter. Cleggs living room changes in the early years a few times. It was still supposed to be the same location because they were consistent on the external shots. Keep in mind there were two sides to the building, so it doesn't always look the same.

Isn't there a 3rd location? Where was Cleggie's place in Full Steam Behind (Series 5, Episode 1) when Clegg was ironing Compo's tie? The opening shot appears to show the front entrance, which is not the clock tower flat entrance.

Yes.

That would (supposed to) be the place we see the exterior of at the end of Small Tune on a Penny Wassail.

I don't think that place is actually the same place used in Hail Smiling Morn, though it does look a bit similar.

3 or possibly 4 places were used for the exteriors - though the studio scenery for the interiors will differ as not much care was taken over such details in those days.

We see the rear of Cleggs when they get the camping gear out it was quite a large area with paving slabs, the view from his front door over the town and clock tower was rather nice especialy when it was misty. The house at Jackson Bridge had the best view of all and in reality had an unusual layout with the living room up stairs and a large back garden which we never saw.Cleggs first house was quite large with a dining room kitchen straight off the front door a design typical of Britain in the twenties and thirties ,everyone who lived in such a property always had a curtain over the front door to stop the cold coming in.I think they used the same property until they moved Foggy,s house was only seen twice and Blamires was only seen at the gate .

It seems to me that in the very first series the inside of Cleggs is a bit drab with a fifties sort of furniture and he has quite an odds and end assortment of cups etc when he gives Compo and Blamire a cup of tea in I think its "hail smiling morn or thereabouts". Later his living room seems much smarter. It's the same with his clothes : the stiff collar and tie usually a bit squewiff (sorry no idea how to spell that) gets smarter in the later ones.
