Where have all the "Gentlemen" gone ?

Watching the webcams and also in my own town I wonder why it is nearly always the ladies that walk on the road side of the pavements. Is it an equality thing or is it to keep the mere male safe from harm. My mother brought 4 brothers up to be always on the road side when walking, we even switched sides after crossing the road. I may have stated this before but I still hold doors open for people. I was once called a chauvinist for doing so . I told the "lady" in question to blame a woman for teaching me to do it.:speechless:

My husband always insists on walking on the outside because he says " so my sword arm is always free to withdraw my sword and protect you"
I usually roll my eyes and say something that is too non PC for the forum

However, being a non feminist I applaud you Dick :28:

I don't think you are Gill I was brought up to hold the door open for a Lady and have never forgotten it to this day . I am surprised at the reaction I sometimes get but as a Gentleman I certainly would not repeat the content on the forum.

That is also why the groom always stands on the right and the bride stands on the left; to leave the sword arm free.

When I approach a door with both of my hands full, I appreciate anyone holding it open for me! On the other hand, if my male escort is a few steps behind me and I have at least one hand free, I'll open the door and hold it open for him as I walk through. I lack the patience to stand there and wait for him.

As for which side of the pavement to walk on, I was taught that the protector walks to the outside to shield the protected from runaway horses. Now, a mugger concealed in a doorway or an oblivious pedestrian exiting a shop is a much more likely hazard than a runaway vehicle, so I feel safer on the outside whether I'm with someone or by myself.

In current times there is a new breed of danger , people texting on their phones and it matters not where you position yourself on the pavement . I always take avoiding action but I am tempted to just keep going, as a tall chap there's only going to be one winner if someone walked into me .

As a rather slight 5' 1 5/8" person (and still shrinking with age), I'd probably be knocked for a loop if I tried that.

That's a good point Marianna, we have a large park near to us and down the side of the park is large main road, if I'm walking to my daughter's house I walk down the street between the park and the road, there's a cycle path and a footpath, the footpath is nearest the park which is surrounded by bushes and large trees but people feel safer walking on the cycle path at night well away from the bushes and trees, I'd rather get splashed by puddles than dragged into the bushes.

I hesitate to bang on about this but you are not safe on the cycle paths(at least not in my area) The cyclists will mow you down and then blame you for being in their way! What ever happened to bicycle bells??:cautious::13:

It is a sad indictment of the Society we live in that people cannot walk safely and have to take evasive action to ensure they are protected from harm it is so distressing :frown:

We've moaned about it to the council, everyone walks on the cycle path, it's a half mile long walk in near darkness next to basically woodlands because the bushes and trees are quite thick and the cap it off the street lighting is on the cycle path side.

I see a lot of cyclist's in A & E

Having taken up OCRs and night walking I'm not surprised, the amount of idiots cycling round with no lights, dressed in black and no helmet is shocking. I've given up shouting at them because they don't see where the problem is.

My daughter, son in law and grandkids cycle they all have helmets and reflective jackets, even in the day time.

Hi Pearl. How is your OCR and night walking going? I do hope they are both going well,
