Why Have I not Spotted this Before

The amount of times I have watched 3 men and a mangle yet never noticed

1. When the policemen first stop under the bridge the back of the car is level with the bridge

2. When the mangle goes through the roof of the car the car has been moved further back

3. When the mangle hits the roof there is a large police sign and blue light that goes through the roof into the car, yet it's not inside the car when the policemen return

There was a good market for used police signs in Holmfirth then ,plus they did not fully engage the handbrake they were disciplined later on and made £50 for the sign.

Perhaps the sign came up with the mangle and Compo knew where it could be exchanged for beer vouchers (aka £5 notes!)

I still enjoy the episode immensely but I've never delved into the scene too much after noticing the obvious rope tricks a the beginning, where the slack rope suddenly transforms into some kind of boating knot around the mangle. One of those scenes (of many) where it is best just to suspend belief and roll with it.

I think it's great they we are so absorbed in the show, that we miss many of the tricks they pulled over the years

Some of these tricks are highly improbable but not totally impossible - sounds a bit like somethign I might read in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ...

Only ever read the trilogy - in five parts - and heard it on CD which was the radio series.

I was Holmfirth yesterday as part of an all too short weekend break only had 90 minutes in Holmfirth but had time to visit the museum and saw said mangle which is part of the museum display see below sorry photo not great as my phone camera is not high resolution
