I am hoping some of you can tell me what the red-ish / purple-ish colored flowers are that grow in clusters along the roads and hillsides of Holmfirth are. Would love to have something like them growing in the yard to give it some LotSW ambiance.

My apologies for not having a better screen capture from the series to show you. I seem to think about it after I have watched an episode in which they appeared. Plus, I did not realize we could post pictures directly to the forums. Thought we had to use a separate server to store them.

I can go back and look for better if need be. I'm also sorry I did not think of asking Daveg to snap a picture of some while he was there recently. The flowers appear frequently scattered along the roads and hillsides that the cast wander about. Maybe this crude screencap helps give an idea of the plant.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Cheers,

Not been able to find any at the local plant stores yet. Did find some seeds for heather online and ordered some. May be a bit before I have any growing in the yard, but I'm hopeful.

I don't recall ever having seen heather here in the States, but White Flower Farm is offering a collection of 12 plants, each in a 1 qt. pot, which they say will cover 35 sq. ft. $160 for the 12 plants. They're currently out of stock, though, as it's apparently a bit late in the season to plant them. http://www.whiteflowerfarm.com/80233-product.html in case you're interested in looking at them anyway.

Its fairly abundant here in the UK up on the Hills and Moors . It does get plundered and sold , purporting that it has connotations of being lucky , a lot of people buy it from the sellers because they believe if they don't somehow that will impart bad luck on them . I am not sure about other cities and towns but there are a couple of regular sellers who walk the streets of Newcastle . It is quite interesting to observe the tactics of people who try to avoid them probably only matched by those avoiding the Chuggers [charity workers who grab people in an unsolicited manner and try to force them to impart their contact details so they can make donations which you may think is a good thing but the charities , as I understand it, don't get anything near the full donation] and sadly the Big Issue Magazine sellers, which is a magazine sold to help the homeless.

Thank you so much Marianna for the awesome website! As you said they are out of the Brigadoon collection, but they do have individual plants of the
Calluna vulgaris rubrum heather variety for sale. Which is alright because I was planning to try out just a few plants to start with to see how well they do. Going to order a few of those today. It is nice to see that they are deer resistant as well. They have chewed down a few plants here in the past, haha.

I would have to ask Marina as to which one it is as she has had more experience of hiding in it than anyone I have seen.

I agree. Marina would have more experience as she has probably danced, hidden, inhaled and plucked Heather.

My heather plant arrived today from the site Marianna mentioned. A nice looking little plant that was well packaged. Looking forward to seeing how it will do. The soil here has some clay in it so I need to add some peat moss and such for the heather.

Many thanks for the help in identifying what I was looking for. Kudos to Gill for pointing me in the right direction. Kudos to the rest for confirming the right direction. Kudos to Marianna for the website. Trying to grow them from seeds I found elsewhere online would have been an exercise in patience. As you can tell I'm an excited, happy camper. :)

Cheers,
Rick

Now that we have discussed heather now I would like to address the subject of "gorse" which is a plant with yellow flowers which Marina and Howard would occasionally "investigate."

It's not all bad press for the yellowy prickly stuff a quote from the Guardian:-

"Dazzlingly yellow with the flavour of coconut, gorse flowers make a wonderfully rich, full-bodied country wine"
