From 1948: "On a Slow Boat to China"- Kay Kyser Orchestra, Vocals by Harry Babbitt and Gloria Wood. I've had this song on heavy rotation for the past month. Gloria Wood has the jazzy, flashy vocal, but it's beautifully set up with Harry Babbitt's smooth lead in.

Ringo Starr- "Photograph" Ever have a song become acutely relevant after having heard it for many years without it ever having applied to you? This is one of those songs for me.

    Series Two (1975) Episode Reviews

A delightful March 1975 Radio Times cover promoting Series Two. I like the reference to The Likely Lads and the then-recently finished Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads, programs I absolutely adore.

Thank you for your kind words. I'm happy you're enjoying the reviews. I know I'll resume the reviews, it's just a question of overcoming my recent laziness! I'm also presently watching a much-later era, which makes me wonder if I should stop that, or just write about the series out of order.

"Babe" by Styx. Not a group of which I'm especially fond, but I can't deny the song is a classic, and one that carries an inescapable nostalgia for me from that time (1979). Another of the group's songs, "The Best of Times" has a similar power of nostalgia.

50 Years Ago This Very Day...

I "finally" got around to watching the pilot a mere 49 years after it originally aired, as I was far too busy being almost two back in 1973. My family didn't watch LotsW, but I think my grandfather (on my dad's side) would have loved it. maltrab, you raise an interesting point: My elders, who...

Libera Me, from the Priory School episode of the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series. The piece is a sacred-sounding arrangement of the legendary theme by Patrick Gowers. In fact, when I learned of Gowers' death, Libera Me was the first theme of his which came to mind. The theme works...

    R.I.P. Hagrid

Robbie Coltrane was a great talent. More importantly, he had the rare gift of being a likeable performer, which doesn't come with talent nor can it be taught. I've been doing a Still Game rewatch and ironically the last episode I watched--just yesterday--was Robbie's episode.

"Gentle on My Mind"- Glen Campbell I return to this rendition of the song a couple times a year. It's an outstanding performance for sure, but look at how all of those country music legends look on in admiration and affection at Campbell the artist and the man.
